Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
This is completely irrelevant. If some more excellent, demonstrably better style came along, would it be less better because it is new? Yes, I could say it is "less better," as you idiomatically suggested, however, not because it's new but because of the lack of deeper thought and analysis put into...

Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
Riichi grades the hands based on the difficulty of the situation or conditions in which they're made under. I would sincerely like to believe this, but I've seen no evidence for it. I admit I haven't searched very hard, but I've not even seen a hint that this is the case. The yaku seem to me to be ...

Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
Be as it is may, I did observe Torgo playing some bit of Riichi with the Chicago group, and per my observation, I wasn't sure if the man was having fun or not. If I remember correctly, we were shooting for some fast hands, per usual. So, if we made your Riichi experience that of a bad one, my bad d...

Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
Anybody can just discard tiles and aim for pinfu, or their favorite yaku or whatever, but it requires a huge amount of skill to overcome luck factors to come ahead winning long-term. This is very true. However, I believe that long term in riichi is hundreds or thousands of games, which pushes out t...

Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
To me, it seems unfair that a player with a valueless hand such as pinfu can score an overwhelming number of points because of luck-based add-ons like menzen tsumo, ippatsu, kan dora, and ura dora. It's not unfair, because that element can apply to ANYBODY at any given moment. Instead of "unfair" (...

Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
This topic made me research up on Zung Jung, something I hadn't heard of until just now. After playing around with the rules for a tad bit, I just really don't like or understand their principal. It seems like the creator has gone out of his way to reduce luck as much as possible in an inherently l...

Re: How to organize a Reach Mahjong Tournouament
What do you think if from the results of the 1st round we put the 4 highest players play together, the 4 middle players together and the 4 low players together???? That is called a "Swiss" tournament and it will ensure people are playing others of similar placing. Whether that's luck or skill in one...

Re: Yakuman Club
And yet, MCR does recognize the hand. A nod to the Japanese, perhaps?Goldeneye wrote:All Green/Ryuu Iisou is pretty much a standard Yakuman in Riichi Mahjong these days.
In the past (about the 1960s-1970s) or so, it was seen as an "Americanized" hand - and not even Chinese mahjong recognized it then I think.

South could be well along to toitoi, but chanta is not likely with those discards. Being so far being, perhaps she just wants a win to start getting some luck back.

Re: A question
All of that plus: Each tile can be single, in a pair, in a sequence, or in a triplet. No tile can be in both a pair and a sequence. Since your hand's only legal form was seven pairs, you had no sequences. The hand still qualifies for any yaku that considers the whole hand, such as tanyao, juchan, ho...

Re: 9 terminal or honors in the starting hand ,what should u
Thirteen orphans is by far the easiest yakuman to get. I don't gamble for money, and it's so fun to get it, that I usually go for it if I only have 8 of them with my first draw.

Re: Pao Rules/Insurance Penalties...
I wonder how fair is it to extend Pao to Suu Kan Tsu, considering it is virtually the rarest Yakuman to make. As you note, it's incredibly rare - I've never even completed a *three* kongs hand - so it's almost irrelevant whether they include it or not. When playing MCR style on Mahjongtime.com, I h...

Re: What to discard?
Why not 3-crak ? It's not connected to anything else. Edited to add: If you do discard 3-crak, you are one away from ready, and will be ready with 3-dot , 6-dot , or 9-dot . That's 12 tiles to get you to a single, 3-tile wait. If you discard, say, 1-dot , you have two disconnected tiles and are two ...

Re: JoyJan Beta Testing Begins
It works great on my laptop, which is very new and very fast, even though it runs Linux. On my old desktop (a 2.8GHz P4), not so much. Oh well. But my main complaint is that both times I went to play, no one else was there. The last update on the news page is coming up on two years old. The UI wasn'...
