Re: Best translation software?

Hehe yeah I'd help out as long as we are staying within copyright. This is why the project must not be a direct translation, but more a summary of key concepts. Perhaps just starting a glossary of these terms and adding them as we find them would be a useful resource? Google docs anyone? A serious,...

Re: Where to Get Mah Jong Mats

I never saw Japanese mats sold in Canada. I know many players who made one themselves. A Japanese friend brought one for me directly from Japan. Personally, after utilizing one for more than two years, I prefer full table tops. We buy Chinese fold-able tables and remove the legs. There are really ch...

Re: Best translation software?

Thank you, Gemma.

I am guessing you are a professional translator. And you are telling me, a reliable software for Japanese->English hasn't been invented yet. Damn. $/&?%/ I was hoping there is one...

Would you be willing to participate to a project like this one?

Re: Best translation software?

(I do not currently have time). Usually I do this for much shorter words and sentences. Ok. Too burdensome and/or you aren't really able to translate full sentences just by searching in WWWJDIC. However, thank you for trying and for your honest answer. At least, I know I am not the only one finding...

Re: Best translation software?

I just prefer do it manually by searching the words that I don't know in WWWJDIC and in other mahjong information files. To test your method, please translate this sentence : 平均順位は偶然性によってどの程度ぱらつくのか1 - 4位を等しい確率て1又る、実力が2.5位(つま りずっと打ち続けた場合、その平均順位が2.5位に限 りなく近づいていく)の打ち子が10試合打ったとす る。 How much time did it...

Re: Best translation software?

For translating Mahjong related document, up to now, I the most satisfied with Google Translation Toolkit (GTT) and OmegaT . GTT works in Google's cloud and permits collaboration. OmegaT is written in Java, so it is platform independent. Both use Google for the initial automated translation, then yo...

Best translation software?

In your opinion, what is the best Japanese->English translation software, online or standalone? Google is crap for Mahjong terminology.

(Please don't comment on how humans are far better translators than softwares. We all know it. This thread is about... SOFTWARE)

Re: Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

As far as the translation goes, first off, wouldn't it be best to have the imported text first to work with? If ANYONE wants a translated book, we'll need that first. PDF from somewhere online would probably be best, but just someone with a scanner, book, and a japanese OCR could do it too. There i...

Re: Scoring Sticks

I guess you're talking about 5k 1k 500 100?(kinda too much imo) Yep, 4*5k (red) + 3*1k (blue) + 3*500 (black or green)+ 5*100 (white) , which is the composition of most basic poker chips sets sold everywhere. Not only it's a cheap alternative to scoring sticks, but I find poker chips easier to hand...

Re: Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

A lengthy post to say... you are not interested in studying strategy books. You feel it is a burdensome task, requiring too much effort, especially compared to the easier alternative of relying on luck and gut feelings. We heard you, mostek. Now, please, step aside so the ones not afraid to work to ...

Re: Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

That book Richard looks like its for total beginners. Don't be fooled by the drawing on first page. That book is written by とつげき東北, a statistician who applied hardcore mathematical principles to Mahjong. He initially wrote 科学する麻雀 . It cannot be farther to your Saki themed book. Some kind of a fan-t...
