Re: More basic strategy requests.

personally, I think its best to stay flexible and let the tiles you draw determine which way your hand is going, at least for the first 6-10 draws or so. But since you mentioned it was the first hand of the east round, sitting as dealer, and none of these hands (except maybe the third) look like the...

Gut feeling and 'Nagare' versus Playing by the books

Any seasonsed Mahjong player will tell you, Mahjong at its basics, is a more of a game of defense and protecting your points, than a game of seeing who can get the most points first. Similar to Poker really, you get in when you have the best of it, and you jealously defend your stack when you dont. ...

Re: Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

And dont judge me dick. Like you judged all those looking for more advanced books to be "armchair experts"? Try to be civil, butting into the discussion like you did was rude. This place is big enough to carry all kinds of discussions, if you want to discuss gut feeling versus book knowledge go ahe...

Re: Scoring Sticks

I always liked the big heavy metal scoring sticks that are used with those automatic mahjong tables. http://www.mansengo.net/free/marujan_tenbo.gif something like that. But its true, most games are played as 25000 or 27000 buy in with a 30000 point return. I'm guessing your set probably have enough ...

Re: Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

A lengthy post to say... you are not interested in studying strategy books. You feel it is a burdensome task, requiring too much effort, especially compared to the easier alternative of relying on luck and gut feelings. We heard you, mostek. Now, please, step aside so the ones not afraid to work to...

Re: Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

There are also things that you can't learn from experience, like statistical analysis and other game theory. It's possible to re-invent the wheel all by ourself, but having a good book or other source is better. Books are also useful to learn from other peoples' experience, not only your personal o...

Re: how did you learn about mahjong?

I learned about it because I´ve watch Nana, XXX Holic and I´ve played Yakuza 2 (Ryu ga Gotoku 2). When I looked on the web to learn how to play, I found Akagi. Then when I had understood the basics, I found Saki and Legendary gambler Tetsuya. I love tetsuya. I learned about tsubame gaeshi from tets...

Re: Question about Renho and Chiho

is a yaku required for a rencho? with chiho you will automatically get the menzen tsumo yaku, but supposing you have a hand that is in tenpai but lacking a yaku, can you still win with renho? Renho IS a yaku. Tenho and Chiho are also yaku. right that makes sense.. so i feel stupid now lol al...

Re: Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

sorry if im stating the obvious but,
there are some things that you cant learn in a book. experience is the best teacher.
if possible, playing mahjong (with real people) imo is the best way to learn.
even better if money is involved.
old japanese men in particular seem have alot to say

Re: Suu ankou and chombo/dead hand questions.

by the way, a su anko tanki machi (waiting on the pair) is actually a double yakuman at most tables. so yea you can win by ron with a su anko hand and and you should be very happy about it. also, accidentally knocking over tiles is almost never an automatic chombo. especially if playing among friend...

Re: Who Else is In Japan?

I live in chiba, for about 2 years now, and I always figured I was the only westerner in the world that knew how to play mahjong until I found this board haha
