Re: 3 Player question

I have never played Tenhou before and this may sound stupid. If it does feel free to ignore it, but are you sure that the hand itself it worth 9000 points? It was definitely 9000. Tenhou has a pretty clear distinction between the value of the hand and then extra points accrued through bonus points ...

Re: Dude, where's the strategy?

Where exactly are you playing on Tenhou? If you're in the open lobby, not the dan lobby, then yeah, you're going to get a lot of players who aren't that good and who don't play with strategy in mind that much. If you pass up the option to play with experienced players only to play with people who ca...

Re: 3 Player question

damn, you jerk, you just called a bonus dora, AND got an extra yaku? 3p gets hella inflated. 3-player is pretty much synonymous with luck and stupidly inflated hands though. Out of interest, does anyone have a reference for the hand-scoring system that Tenhou uses? I've not really played enough to ...

Re: JanRevo Tutorial

I've read a quite a few players complaining about it, but that may have been from the p ast. Pretty sure it is. I'm a registered player, and I don't see anything that exceptional in my game stats . It could possibly be the case that registered players get some sort of bonus against unregistered pla...

I'm pretty sure your opinions about Tenhou are outdated and/or misinformed. Paid users don't get any sort of bonus that free users don't get in terms of the mahjong itself.

Re: Pinfu Details

I'm pretty sure the correct answer is 3, and at best that the more commonly played option is that in 1. I think that with any ambiguity in the rules of mahjong you'll find different groups will play each interpretation. I for one am quite used to playing where any wait on two tiles is deemed OK for ...

Re: Asking special seven pair??

If he'd gone for Kokushi he wouldn't have gotten it. All those 1's and 9's would have been 5's or 6's, or all the remaining honour tiles, because that's how mahjong works :P

Re: More basic strategy requests.

By no means suggesting I'm an expert, but here's what I think I'd do in this situation: The first hand for me would depend on the scores and round at the time. Unless I was a fair bit behind 1st and it was South round, I'd probably just rush out the obvious quick hand with a pon of green, unless the...

Re: Problem with discard

Sounds odd. The only situation I know of where Tenhou blocks discards is if you're shifting a chi by calling it (ie. if you have 3,4,5 you can't call a chi on a discarded 2 and then discard the 5), or, I think, trying to discard a tile you've just called.

Re: Riichi Copenhagen Open, 2-3 October 2010

Personally I'm just busy on the dates available. I can fly to Copenhagen pretty cheaply (about £50 return), but there's not much I can do about it if I have prior engagements (university classes). I also never really considered going to many of the abroad tournaments, mostly because I had other thin...

Re: how did you learn about mahjong?

One of the CD that came with one of my computer's (now long defunct) CD-ROM unit had several games, and one of them was a Mahjong game (Hong Kong style, which is basically call out with any regular hand). That's my first memory I can recall of "Mahjong is not a solitaire thing with weird pictures"....

Tenhou Replay Thread

A thread to post interesting, educational or (most likely) ridiculous games on Tenhou in replay form. Starting with a game I had this evening, which definitely falls into the ridiculous category: http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2010082206gm-0089-0000-x59ac8b84d2f0&tw=3 Spoiler: First hand was in tenpai for...

Re: Players' placement - Seating at the table

What's your point? The OP was describing how the Japanese do it, which is what most on this forum are interested in. The anime Saki disagrees. The "shuffle wind tiles face-down and pick one" method seems to be used in Japan as well. Shuffling face-down tiles also has the added ability to be able to...
