Re: WWYD 2012/10/13
8-dot Since North didn't ron off the 5-dot I think 8-dot is safe *enough* that it's not worth breaking tenpai. Also there's no :west showing and it's non-yakuhai for everyone, so I feel like there's a decent chance it would come out. But with either choice that keeps you in tenpai, there are only 3...

Re: Where do you fall on the Okaruto - Dejitaru Spectrum?
O1 To me, there's nothing superstitious about Takei Hisa's preference to bad waits. If there are 3 instances of a tile already in the pond, wouldn't you be more inclined to discard it if you have the 4th one? I play in a "digital mahjong" way but I also take luck and my own mentality into considerat...

Re: Mahjong pet peeves
Omg. I hate having those moments where you make the right judgements of which tiles are dangerous then you end up playing into someone's hand anyway... "that guy must be waiting on a terminal, all his discards are simples" *near end of the game, play a terminal* RON RON RON RON RON RON RON RON I nee...

Re: Newbie introduction
Hey guys, the name's Sonny and I'm a 16 year old student in California, US. I've been interested in Mahjong, since 2010 when I found the animes: Akagi, Saki, and Shoubushi Densetsu Tetsuya. Some of my other hobbies include: browsing the internet, working out, playing sports(basketball, tennis, etc.) ...

Re: Mahjong pet peeves
My wife Jenn had a Riichi mini-meltdown last night. Playing JanRyuMon HD Mobile and another player was declared as being Tenpai but was nowhere near having the 1 required Yaku scoring element. Because their hand was still 1 tile away from 'ready' (again, a theoretical ready as the game wouldn't hav...

Re: Question
I've seen sets similar to that on eBay, wouldn't really expect to see any modern ones in that style. Note the convex curved backs which make it harder to stack them for the wall and Arabic numerals in the corners so made for export. Might have slightly irregular hand-crafted markings? I found a set...

Re: Question
Where does one get a set of mahjong tiles like this? I'm specifically looking for those kind of backs. I've had good luck scouring ebay - people have bought sets for more than a century now and many list those sets for sale for a reasonable price. I just got a nice 1955 Japanese bone and bamboo set...

Re: Reading waits
When I play, I just look for the least dangerous tile to play. I think what I'm looking for is a good way to figure out what the best tile to discard...I'm not sure. That's exactly how it works. The chart simply tells what is the safest tile. When playing pure defense, that is typically enough. The...

Re: Reading waits
Waits can't be read. Real mahjong isn't Ten. http://www.osamuko.com/basic-defense-techniques-in-mahjong/ This is how to defend. The suji are helpful - this table tells how much. Are you trying to say I will never execute godly plays like Akagi?! ;_; So there's really no way to guess what your oppon...

Reading waits
For quite a while now, I've been playing and avoided losing by using some simple tactics like: -discarding terminals first -then winds unless it is my wind tile or the wind tile of the round -keeping honors either to get an easy yaku or as a safe tile for the later rounds -dealing a tile that was ju...
