Re: Best non-yakuman revisited
Here's a fun one I got during the North Wind online riichi tournament:

Re: WWYD 2014-02-14
I'm a very aggressive player, so even on the first turn, I'd try to chase tanyao without abandoning good waits and not hesitate to open the hand. 4-bam doesn't remove any ryanmen waits and still keeps a lot of call flexibility by keeping all of the pairs I can pon on. This hand has a lot more potent...

Re: A question on winning?
That should've been fine. Either way, even if it weren't south round, your yaku would be toitoi and you weren't furiten on either of your outs. It's a problem with the client.

Re: WWYD 2013-10-14
This is a really bad situation to be in during tonpuusen :( 1-bam . The only way you can win your way out of last place is riichi+tsumo+tanyao/East+dora. ron for 3900 off of 3rd place will bring you out of last with the honba, but if your hand was in that position, might as well go for riichi, no? T...

Re: A question on waits?
It depends on the shanpon wait imo. The potential for suji trap won't be enough against more experienced players who have the discipline to play full defense. I'd probably just choose kanchan wait regardless, but that's not a very strong play in the second example hand. The only time I would choose ...

Re: WWYD 2013-10-07
I agree with
, but it's important to note that by discarding
you're still ryanshanten for tanyao. kuitan is an easy option if you feel like other players are keeping a single
and playing defensively.

Re: interpretation of statistics
1: That number means your average placing rate. It's the table place you would be expected to get on average if you played against 3 other opponents of any skill level since it averages all of the games played. 2: agari/furikomi rate averages depend a lot on play level, but a 2:1 win/loss ratio is v...

Re: [2013.09.24] Player Quality
I don't know the strength/weakness of tournament players in general, let alone European or MCR players, BUT I think that those complaints are absolutely valid. Lack of knowledge means that they should not be in the tournament, period. There should definitely be ways to make newer players feel welcom...

Re: WWYD 2013-09-23
7-bam . With a single draw you can open it up for sanshoku or chanta, and there's still a strong possibility of completing the ryankan and getting pinfu on its own. If you draw the edge tiles, you can open for chanta sanshoku, and if you get closed you can aim for riichi with pinfu. No reason to che...

Re: WWYD 2013-09-02
Any honor tile besides
I feel like they're being held on to as well. That means dumping them now and pursuing chiitoi while hoping to draw the dora. the scores are still balanced, so letting people open their hands is not a super big drawback as long as you don't give them the dora.

Re: WWYD 2013-08-26

Although it is the dora and this hand isn't completely developed yet, keeping closer tiles gives more flexibility when chasing tenpai. I'd rather just get rid of it now before it can become dangerous later (on the off chance that it doesn't develop).

Re: WWYD 2013-03-25
5-crak It leaves us with the fastest open road to tenpai. 4-bam 5-bam 5-bam and 8-bam 9-bam 9-bam are both great groups that can develop into complete sets, and the other two-sided waits are fairly likely to be completed. Riichi only is enough, and your wait will either be two-sided or shanpon takin...

Game Critique Thread
I'm surprised a thread like this doesn't exist already, but...here it is. We post games of ourselves playing mahjong and/or share advice for each other based on games we've played. Maybe this is kind of like a mahjong study group, but I think since it's a forum thread rather than a "let's all get to...

Re: WWYD 2013/01/14
I'll go first~ It's the final hand of the tonpuusen, and you have a large score advantage. The dealer is making aggressive discards and is almost 100% aiming for tanyao. Can't gauge the value or other yaku of his hand this early, but you have a great hand shape that can still be opened up pretty qui...
