Re: Starting game points
If you are busted with a notes riichi it’s a chombo indeed ;-) The case referred to here is if you declare riichi with a valid tenpai hand and get a dead hand penalty afterwards. Your hand was tenpai when you riichied and still has a tenpai shape, so no chombo, but it is not considered tenpai due to...

Re: Starting game points
Since EMA tournaments usually record the scores on paper, they are not needed, so players just write the points Is this still true? I don't know about all ema tournaments but in those I see (in person or reports) paper seems to be rapidly loosing ground! (Which is for the best as far as I'm concern...

Re: Declaring Ron for a chi question
To clarify: chii is actually the call itself, the action of forming a sequence (or "shuntsu" in Japanese), while ron is a distinct call, the action of completing your hand. If you look at it that way it becomes pretty clear why restrictions for chii don't apply to ron

Don't know how famous the Shadoks are in the world but as a French I'm sure Shirluban will get it

Close but not exactly. What about, say: chiitoitsu, tsumo, tanyao, dora x2?Shirluban wrote:Same for Seven Pairs 2-25 VS 1-50: in the end, it's the same thing.

Re: Shiisan Pūtā (Thirteen Unrelated Tiles)
This kind of rule is highly unusual so I doubt there's a standard for it. Whether there is or not, there's not much to complain about if there's a variation since it's already a deviation from the cannon.

Re: World Riichi Championship 2017
Actually the final tables of the 2014 WRC where broadcasted on niconico! Although it was more basic than what you can usually see on the JPML channel, it was live, so it's possible if not likely that they'll do it again

Re: Is it ok to go for tanyao/pinfu/riichi/tsumo all the time?
In mahjong and except special cases the number one concern is speed. So as you state most yaku don't come so often, or even almost never, and whereas when you first learn the rules you're excited about all that and think mostly (which yaku should I make with this hand), ad you progress you (should) ...

Re: Is it ok to go for tanyao/pinfu/riichi/tsumo all the time?
Pinfu is correlated with high tile efficiency patterns, while tanyao uses highly efficient tiles, so it's only logical that both come often. I can't find the numbers anymore but there are statistics and they are the most common yaku of the game. I'd say what would be wrong is to aim at too high hand...

Re: Mahjong etiquette question
If you're willing to bluff, do so with the tiles you discard. Using language (even body language like slamming your tiles on the table) is considered very poor manners, and depending on the context could get you into trouble: no problem with friends, could get you a remark or a ban in a jansou depen...

Re: Yakuman Club Revisited
Referee> Whether you think the rule is legitimate or not, I think you should feel free to use it if the situation requires it! The game isn't fair because the rules make sense, it's fair because they're the same for everyone. So by not taking advantage of rules that are used, even if you don't like ...

Re: Suu Ankou: Should I Try?
With south left to play, take the win if you tsumo. A yakuman is always nice but your hand isn't exactly small as it is. If you tsumo it you're in range for a 1st place with a mangan, and you're not in position to immediately loose a rank either. I'd riichi if it's a game that counts and it's a norm...

Re: oh boy!
I'd guess the option is there because it's a possibility, there are a lot of optional rules that are actually almost never used! As for relaxing the rules in nana, one could argue that since tonba is not as decisive it's giving too much to the dealer when they don't have as much pressure to fold, an...

Re: oh boy!
The thing is that being dealer is something than can make your points a lot bigger. The renchan is mostly good for the dealer, and it usually comes as a reward for winning/being tenpai (sometimes the dealer will try to win with small hands or get tenpai with no yaku just for the renchan). So allowin...
