Re: What would you do?
There is a fundamental problem with the thought process here and that is one detail is missing. How many unsafe discards did you make since his riichi? Were you already iishantan? Because if this south was already in your hand before you reached tenpai you really needed to decide there--now is too l...

Re: WWYD 2015-03-24
Repeat after me. Open honitsu sucks. Open honitsu sucks. Open honitsu sucks. It is only good for a quick win (especially if you have dora) or when there's other yaku present. In itself, it's highly inefficient in terms of points earned, especially if you want to take 1st. Sticking yourself with a 29...

Re: Discussion: East-Only (Tonpuusen) vs East-South (Hanchan
East only is basically like playing short stacked in poker. Bad players (like myself) have less opportunities to screw up, thus they have a better chance. For example, let's say I never defended and I hit a lucky mangan in the first round if we play a hanchan. The chances that I lose my points back ...

Re: Let's Start Again
Honroutou is actually a total of 4 http://reachmahjong.com/en/2007/11/in-garthes-hands-16-all-terminals-all-terminals-and-honors/ ; I'm quite sure Tenhou shows it as 混老頭 2 対々和 2 It's six, because it's impossible to get Honroutou with chi in the hand, which means it's also going to be seven pairs or...

Re: Let's Start Again
I think life would be easier if one just sees iipekou defined as "exactly one pair of two identical sequences" and ryanpeikou as "exactly two pairs of two identical sequences". In fact that's what the names of those patterns are saying! Thus they can never occur together then and they are seperate y...

Re: WWYD 26 July 2010
Yea, I think this is a much better idea for WWYD and should be more like it. Anyhow, I said discard the 9 man for tanyao and ease of opening the hand if needed And then I couldn't think of anything else. That makes me a bad player right. :p Another thing to pay attention to the upper seat, discardin...

Re: Let's Start Again
Things that could help: 1.) Sticky threads with informative links, be it to wikipedia or just a simple site that lists all the rules. In fact, it's a bit odd that a site dedicating to Reach Mahjong doesn't have an easily accessible link where the common rules could all be found in one place. Just fr...

Re: Gut feeling and 'Nagare' versus Playing by the books
Eh, I wouldn't take Rounders seriously. :p The Hollywood version of things is well... oversimplifying things. I would go with digital (book). Too many times people will say "I felt it" when asked about a certain moved that work, and that's often just a excuse than a reason. People are generally terr...

Re: Suu ankou and chombo/dead hand questions.
The 3/4 concealed pons yaku simply refer to the pons being concealed, not the hand. As long as the relevant pons are all self drawn, it doesn't matter. But for Suu ankou the only part of the hand that doesn't have be concealed is just the pair. So yes, you can ron on the pair and only the pair for s...

Re: About the Pao Rule
Out of curiosity, are you still responsible for bao, if you declared riichi and afterwards you give them the last set?

People try to rationalize everything, and end up seeing patterns when there are none. Sometimes, numbers are just numbers. ;)

Re:What Do You Think of the WSoM Rules?
Why slam the idea that things like Menzen, the Dealer system and Dora could be removed, then say you approve of WSoM, which has in fact removed all of these things? Different styles for different experiences, I guess. There\'s many diffrent ways to play mahjong, and sometimes I have to end up playi...

Re:What Do You Think of the WSoM Rules?
Everyone (except the winner) is \"penalized\" when the hand upgraded from about 100 all to 480 all for throwing what the winner has thrown When I meant penalized, I meant \"responsible\" and has to pay more. In this system, it\'s 2x. But the truth of the matter is that the situation will come up so...
