Re: Client Comparisons & Thoughts
As far as free online multiplayer is concerned, I think Tenhou's the best one by far. There are a couple things about the interface that irk me, but it's definitely quite good, and surprisingly so for a free game. I've never bought a paid subscription to Tenhou, but as far as I know, premium subscri...

Re: How to explain the yaku
As a general rule of thumb, if yaku A implies yaku B (i.e. it is impossible to get yaku A without also having yaku B) and yaku A is worth more than yaku B, then you don't count yaku B. I've found this rule tends to hold across international variants of Mahjong as far as I know. Note that Shousangen ...

Re: Yakuman Club
So I've had a couple yakuman here and there without posting them in this thread, but I just thought I'd share this anecdote from Touhou Unreal Mahjong because of how it happened: First, from the top. 3-player hanchan, online play, full table (no AI players filling in empty seats). In East Round 1, I...

Re: Tenhou scoring quiz has a bug.
I assume you mean this quiz: http://arcturus.su/tenhou/scorequiz/ The scoring quiz has a known bug where a kotsu (in a shanpon wait) completed via ron counts as an an-kou instead of a min-kou. I reported it last August, UmaiKeiki acknowledged the bug, but it still wasn't fixed yet the last time I ch...

Re:Greetings and some questions, part 2
Referee wrote: what to do with your first 13 tiles (ie, how do you decide where you want your hand to go, initially) I can\'t say I speak for everyone, but at the initial deal, very rarely do I have a clear idea of where I want to go with the hand. Usually, with my initial hand, I simply decide whi...

Re:Greetings and some questions
Is there a definite set of rules for this? I\'ve seen different rules about the net, varying on things like Triple Ron allowed vs Head Bump vs Abortive Draw I assume "Head Bump" refers to the rule that says whoever would\'ve had their next turn first (assuming no pon or kan calls), gets priority. T...

Re:2 small rules questions
As far as I know, the typical rules are: 1. The dealer has to take the continuance. An optional house rule can add the exception that he can decline the continuance if it is the last hand, he wins the hand, and he is in first place after the hand is scored and added to his score. (Some also play tha...

Re:Jan Ryu Mon
There actually are statistical tests for these kinds of things. The usual standard is to calculate a p-value, which (to simplify it down greatly) represents the odds of a sequence of events occurring that are at least as unusual as what you observed. Typically, a p-value of less than 0.05 (i.e. 5% c...

Re:Pinfu and Menzen Tsumo
I believe what the OP is talking about is: Standard Riichi rules say that pinfu + menzen tsumo is 20 fu, 2 han. Some play with an optional rule that pinfu + menzen tsumo is 30 fu, 1 han, which would be the same as if you didn\'t count the pinfu. This is actually a rule option on Mahjong Fight Club D...

Re:1st rule of fight club: Don`t talk about fightclub
The DS version might seem "dumbed down" because it was released several years ago, before the arcade MFC 6 was out. As far as I can tell, the only watering down they did was with the graphics, sound, and some online capabilities, the last of which seems to also apply to the PSP and PS3 versions. The...

Re:Jan Ryu Mon
Am I the only one who has come to hate Janryumon? It seems like the play on there is so completely random that winning comes down to a matter of pure luck.... At least on Tenhou I feel like my play actually has an effect on the game... Maybe I just suck at Janryumon or there is some secret strategy...

Re:Jan Ryu Mon
The thing that i couldn\'t figure out its that there is a rating below your name which ranks you for attack , defense and something else. I figured out that the red means attack and the blue apparently meaning prevent(defense thing) but i couldn\'t figure out the green bar (it\'s just too calligrap...

Re:Jan Ryu Mon
Back when I played, the tables lower down the list were for higher stakes, for the points that you could use to buy accessories. (Last time I checked, those points are shown in green on your profile box in the lower right corner at the main menu.) Not sure if it\'s still the same, but that\'s probab...

Re:Dealer continuance & 5 sticks
The rule is that noten riichi is a chombo (penalty-worthy foul), much like declaring ron or tsumo with an invalid hand. However, since nobody is supposed to know anybody else\'s hand composition until the hand is over, noten riichi has to be caught to be a chombo (i.e. the hand ends in a ryuukyoku b...
