Re: Should I have seen this coming?
Given the fact you just discarded 2 1-character tiles just before that? Probably not. His wait is a little hard to read, but I think it might have been possible to notice all of his tiles were inside tiles and just avoid playing the outside tiles. But again, if I discarded 2 in a row that went throu...

Re: Scoring calculation (Menzen-kafu and Pinfu + more)
Actually: Question
I was under the impression that Pinfu hands had special scoring. You get no points on a tsumo for pinfu, and you get only 2 points for a Ron so it rounds up to 30 points, so you don't wind up with 1 han 20 fu. I know it adds up all the same, but has anyone else heard that?

Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
That simply will not work because sometimes good scoring hands will be made faster than your chicken hand. Even a single set of dragons scores the same as ten chicken hands. HOLD IT! A single set of dragons is one of the easiest things to make and also encourages stealing for. It only takes one set...

Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
Well I think you've largely figured it out right there. To turn it around, if you like luck so much, why not just cut a deck of cards and have the losers give all their money to the winner? I can say that I prefer Zung Jung over any other mahjong style because of the reduction in luck. To me, it se...

Re: Official Rulebook in English
It exist at least one project to make an un-official English translation of the JPML rules, but it looks like abandoned since September 2007: http://www.assembla.com/spaces/JPML/wiki/Table_of_content And the JPML offcial rule (in Japanese): http://www.ma-jan.or.jp/guide/game_rule.php Argh! That's w...

Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
Finally, the aspect I dislike the most is the lack of lucky tile situations it provides. If I were to ever get a tenhou in Zung Jung, I would simply cry. One of the rarest occurrences in Mahjong altogether, and potentially, it could be worth only a chicken hand. There's really almost no point in pl...

Official Rulebook in English
Are there any official rulebooks in Japanese that have been translated? Other than EMA or Barticle's HUGE exhaustive pdf file, every set of instructions seem to be from word of mouth. Are there any "official" written instructions from any leagues, or do they just get together and decide what rules a...

Re: Godly wait on the chun
I had a godly wait like that once. I should have took a screen shot. I got into tenpai, and had a choice from throwing out one of my man characters to wait on either a closed wait or an open wait, or I could have thrown out another tile, and have a single wait on the 4 bamboo. Was I was picking, I n...

Re: Discussion regarding rule sets based around Riichi and M
This topic made me research up on Zung Jung, something I hadn't heard of until just now. After playing around with the rules for a tad bit, I just really don't like or understand their principal. It seems like the creator has gone out of his way to reduce luck as much as possible in an inherently lu...

Re: What happened to my tile's paint?
It's a radical suggestion, but I wonder if continued exposure to the same (or worse) conditions might cause the effect to eventually spread until all the tiles are equally and evenly discoloured...?! Funny you mention that. For the last three days, I've been running experiments on three different t...

Re: Mahjong at the movies?
Depends. If you want something really silly, light hearted, and kinda (and by kinda I mean nothing but) cheesy, then look at any of the chinese movies. They're a fun watch, but don't take them seriously. If you want something a little more serious and maybe intense, try finding anything in Japanese....

What happened to my tile's paint?
After having had a long haitus with Mahjong, I decided to get back into it only to discover that this had happened to my Japanese Dragon Set I got from the Mahjong mart way back http://i.imgur.com/PE2kj.jpg 17 of my tiles had obvious blemishes on the back, and almost all of them were bamboo tiles! E...

Re:Overview of current mahjong video-games
I\'d like to say a few things for the iPhone apps. Mahjong Mobile is terrible. As the review on the site claims, it does in fact crash VERY often. I can get maybe one and a half hands in before it crashes. LESS if I mess with the options. It makes the app virtually unplayable. However, I\'d like to ...

Re:Site Suggestions
Well, as long as you\'re asking. . . Another cosmetic thing, but something that irks me is the use of the Chinese terms used in the rules section. The Craks, Bams, and Dots don\'t really bother me that much, or at all in fact, but the calling, Chow and Pong and Kong. I feel it\'s rather. . .unauthen...
