Re:Query re rules
Usually, when we play, we also start at 0 points, simply because we don\'t feel like the game ending before time because someone loses too many points.

Re:Query re rules
In the EMA rules, 3 rons does not cause the hand to get replayed. The player who discarded the tile simply pays the other 3 players (he should probably have known better than to discard that tile). In european tournaments, you start at 0 points, so there is no \"running out of points\". We simply ke...

Combining MCR and Riichi (a thought experiment)
I am one of those who play both MCR and Riichi, and who can\'t seem to decide which ruleset they prefer. Mahjong is a game of patterns and defense, and MCR ignores the defense while Riichi ignores the pattern part (I know MCR does have an element of defense and Riichi has an element of patterns, but...

Re:Red fives - 3 or 4 or 0?
Actually, Senechai, the temporary furiten is broken by chi/pon/kan, so you do not necessarily have to have drawn a new tile before you can again win off a discard

Re:Reading Shan-Ten in High-Level Play
Indeed, if the player does not discard from his hand, he cannot reduce his shan ten. However, if he discards purely from his draws from the beginning (and those discards are not honors and you don\'t think he has decided to give up this hand), then that is a danger sign that he has a fairly low shan...

Re:Shall I make a new version / house rules?
yes, MCR (mahjong competition rules) is the same as those called the international rules and also the ones called the chinese official (CO) rules, or the official chinese (OC). The scoring system is simpler in those rules, but there are a lot more hands to remember (it is not actually that hard to r...

Re:Reading Shan-Ten in High-Level Play
I think that assuming you opponent gets one closer to tenpai each time he discards from his hand is too strong. Many discards from the hand is upon drawing a tile that does not bring you closer to tenpai but simply gives you more tiles that will bring you closer (like if you have a 45 and draw a 5)....

Re:What do you guys do with your flowers/other fives?
I keep the tiles in the trays and just turn the tiles I am not going to use the other way (and sometimes, when I remember to, I also turn one of each wind and an even and an odd tiles the other way so I can easily find tiles to draw lots with)

Re:Ryuukyoku
If you want to never have to fold a hand, play MCR. The bonus payment for winning a hand and the huge amounts of points gained on self-picks means that it is possible to play decently without ever folding a hand (though defensive play still does enter if you play it well enough). But then, if you do...

Re:Ryuukyoku
What it says about riichi is that it is a defensive game, and the no-ten payment is then to encourage a certain degree of offensive play as well. This is the same reason east pays more for self-picks but get more for their own hands. It means that at least one player will almost always be going for ...

Re:Double Runs
From the view of pure probability, a hand like itsuu should be worth more than sanshoku for instance (there are three different ways to make itsuu and 7 different ways to make sanshoku, and since none of them include more than one of a single tile, this translates directly to the ratio of their prob...

Re:What?
In most versions of riichi, no. I know it used to be a rule here to avoid ending the game with draw sticks and riichi sticks still on the table, but there was really no reason for it, since there are fine rules for where the riichi stick goes, and the draw sticks have not been paid by anyone, so the...

Re:Teaching Reach Mahjong to Beginners
We usually teach beginners the MCR rules, as these rules are simpler in most respects, except actually completing hands are harder for beginners (no furiten, simple additive scoring system, no dora, no difference which seat you are for scoring). This way people have usually been playing for some tim...
