The reason it is said to end on a discard is that every player action ends in a discard or winning. A turn may start with a draw or a call.
You can call and discard to end your furiten state. (Someone else calling and discarding could end theirs but not yours)

Re: Mahjong etiquette question
To be fair, in NA/EU, it varies according to who you play with and what your aim is. Unless you're 4 people drinking beer and not gambling, assume that radio silence is the norm. Bluffing, playing the fiddle or being generally disruptive will end up with either a referee call in a public context, or...

Re: Rinshan Kaihô and the Tsumo Fu
The general idea behind not counting 2 fu for self-picking is that you had your chance to win by a self-pick from the live wall. This logic usually extends to how you cannot declare haitei tsumo off of a rinshan replacement tile, because it didn't come from the live wall. Of course, as we know both ...

Re: Query re rules
Ink on paper. While it's not impossible that some people could invent a rule, it's nowhere near a sizable amount to give it any credence. Three modes exist to cover 99.999995% of all riichi mahjong: * Physical points with a physical limit (0 being the lowest legal score to continue the game): you ca...

Re: Hand requirement (Ryanpeikou) question
It's probably not impossible that in the mahjongverse that there is a variant somewhere, out there, that requires that. Riichi mahjong does not. Because of that, I highly recommend not using wikis that mix and match mahjong variants. The only wikis to my knowledge that do not mix variants and are su...

Re: Differences between real life and online mahjong?
Partial Q&A :) Q1: I've seen players in Japanese matches turn the tile they draw sideways and put it on their tiles, is that something you're supposed to do every draw? A1: No, this is solely a made-for-tv/manga thing. If you drew a tile you are going to discard, then chuck it, don't bring it to you...

Re: Max Mahjong
Cofa Tsui would be proud, at least he published rules with his variant tile design. Sadly, this is yet another example on how the exoticism (" asianese character ") that Mahjong seems to represent and people endlessly aiming to scam people into paying hyperinflated amounts for something that already...

Re: Do you meld?
The reward for *not* pushing is too low. If you end up noten, you lose a rank, most likely. If shimocha wins then you can fall deeply. If you can grasp the minimum 1300 points, toimen would need to cover 8800 pt (2:50 or 3:25 direct, 3:40 tsumo, 4+ han ron). There is no merit to playing for more poi...

Re: Mahjong Marseille 2016 (MERS1 in Marseille, France)
I've given my word to someone regarding PAX East. If that falls through, depending on what happens with life, the chance of me showing up in Marseille is low, but not necessarily zero

Re: Fast Mahjong
Our Osamuko friend Dasuke has played at Jankikai a bit. Maybe getting him to post would be a good idea.
There are also "rules" that you must play by as well as the lightning speed. Tanki waits are banned aside from yakuman tenpai hands or 7 pairs, for one.

Time to beat a dead horse for more meat.
Collins, Oxford, Robert and Larousse are in agreement: neither pong, pung, chow or kong havr any mahjong definition whatsoever.
Thus the prevalence claim is a myth.

Re: Has anyone tried playing on Maru_Jan?
Yup.
Not worth it, because it's a pay-to-play system. Why would you ever do that when there are ample free clients out there, or with pay modes with a low flat monthly fee?
Marujan and Janryuumon both belong to the graveyard of mahjong clients.

Re: Mahjong video
The close-ups of the winning hands are nice. It's perhaps personal preference but I would use "han" and "fu" instead of "hans" and fus". There's a rule regarding the use of plural nouns in English and French where if they are of a language without plural markers like Chinese or Japanese, you are on...

Re: Ranking
The inherent problem with table points is that it is ranking a tournament as 8 mini-tournaments is not what people are playing. People are playing 1 8-match tournament. Rank bonuses reward but do not abstract the objective of the game. Take soccer. If we gave 1 point to whoever leads the first half,...
