Re: Intermediate Riichi Strategies by Feng

Yes, it probably lends itself to reading in chunks - or picking out topics of interest.

Doh! I think I missed one - given the Singapore location, likely the same. Another RM forum graduate. :|

Intermediate Riichi Strategies by Feng

Feng (Tenhou 7-dan) released a strategy guide on Facebook for players at intermediate level (Tenhou 1-6 dan). This has now been given a home outside Facebook by Rosti (formerly of this parish). https://mahjong.guide/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Riichi-Strategies-Workshop-2018-by-Feng.pdf It assumes fa...

Re: There must be a better way!

Yes, they could've used the spares with stickers or re-painted the 5 engravings and wiped excess - or made more of an effort to clean 'em for re-sale! The only pics with text are too small to check the language but most likely it's just a Japanese set made before red fives became really popular. Eve...

There must be a better way!

If you had a clean Japanese tile set with nice dovetailed bamboo backs and no Arabic numerals, why would you do this?!

Re: Mahjong at the movies?

Tohai (2013) is a live-action series based on a manga about a high-school student drawn into an underworld of gambling. It's available to stream on Rakuten Viki, although it's not accessible from my country. They have user-generated translated subtitles including some by Kime (formerly of this pari...

Re: Mahjong at the movies?

Why, Why, Tell Me Why! (1986) is a Hong Kong rom-com.

It has some very audacious cheating (when the other players are distracted).

It also has a guy playing four matches at once like a chess grandmaster. (A wheeled chair is an advantage.)

Re: another mahjong book

My biggest fan! Yes, it's about two fiddy (and shipping was free). I wouldn't have paid more as I could see the contents were unchanged. I haven't got Scott's books (yet). Daina's free book is very good and hopefully 'Riichi Book II' will finally be out soon. (That will be newsworthy!) I g...

Re: another mahjong book

Teach yourself mahjong by David Pritchard. I just got a newer edition of this book. Picked it up for a couple of quid off eBay. It was published in 2013 (three years after my previous comments) and was re-named 'Teach Yourself: Play and Win Mah-Jong'. Sadly the small section on Japanese mahjong is ...

Re: Mahjong news

I think if we had any news we'd be posting it here. There's not much that's really newsworthy.

They say "no :north :east :west :south is good news"!

I think that's especially true in mahjong. (American mahjong, I'm looking at you.)

The first book and fourth movie featuring Hannibal Lecter are also called 'Red Dragon'
That 2002 movie also has the tree carving and mahjong reference.

It's a closed flush with a straight, Pinfu and Riichi. The winning tile added Iipeikou, Menzen Tsumo and Ippatsu.

Re: MFC PSP guide now up

My previous guide was specifically for the 2006 version of MFC PSP which includes 48 JPML pro players, Pro CPU Mode and a few extra features. I've recently picked up the original 2004 PSP edition. It doesn't have the pros, but it does have a nice quiz mode that was removed for the 2006 game. The qui...

Re: Best non-yakuman revisited

I've been playing the original 2004 PSP version of Mahjong Fight Club. (Got it for US$4 including shipping!)

Just had a nice Sanbaiman win - very lucky with the Dora. (Default rules use four red fives.)

Log of latest Yakuman wins on Tenhou

I've never played on Tenhou but I just noticed (when I was looking for something else, as usual!) that they have a page listing the hundred most recent Yakuman wins there. http://tenhou.net/sc/ykm.html For each one you can click the first link to view the replay or second one just to see the tiles. ...
