Re:Linguistics of Mahjong
One of the ways I\'m easing my friends into learning the Chinese characters is to play the 3p variant without the 2-8 of characters. That way, they only have 8 character tiles to worry about (1 & 9 characters, 4 winds, 2 dragons). The red dragon doesn\'t really count either since it\'s red. The gree...

Re:Mahjong set + table
Yes, my version is dated 2007. It\'s strange though; I couldn\'t find the publishing date for the life of me in the book, so I had to look up the ISBN number and find it...Tom Sloper wrote:I take it your newer one must be dated later than 2001?

Re:Saki and Riichi?
I\'m working on this myself, but he does it by knowing what the tiles are by touching them. Most mahjong tiles I know have the patterns carved into them :)Ruro wrote:i mean ok he memorizes his whole wall yea but HOW?

Re:Mahjong set + table
What printing is your newer edition? Are those wwyd\'s in the 2001 edition? Or maybe I should ask, what printing is your 1970\'s edition? The newer edition is published by Tuttle Publishing. It has the WWYD\'s in color! The 1977 edition is published by Pan Macmillan. And upon reading the very short...

Re:3-handed Mahjong
Thanks for your reply, Tom, and sorry; I guess I sort of overreacted to your comment. Now that you put it that way, I can see why you said it, however. ...there are numerous other variants whose 3P rules use all tiles without omitting any, using other rules to try to balance the lack of the 4th play...

Re:3-handed Mahjong
@Tom: I suppose the question I meant to ask (and thank you essnov for deducing what I meant :)) is how do these rules fit into 3p playing. Since these rules are common among 3p variations, I was wondering why they are common. Surely there is a logical reason why they are used that is not obvious to ...

Re:3-handed Mahjong
My question is from the standpoint of game mechanics rather than me not liking the rule. What about not allowing chows and using two suits makes these specific rules more suited for 3-player mahjong? What kind of difference would there be if you used all three suits as opposed to two if the same num...

3-handed Mahjong
I played 3-handed riichi mahjong with some of my friends today according to the rules on hirohurl\'s website. After reviewing the ones there, the ones on Tom Sloper\'s website, and the ones at tenhou.net, I have a few questions that I wanted to ask. Why do almost all versions never allow chows? Why ...

Re:Mahjong set + table
As for books about the Japanese game, Eleanor Noss Whitney\'s "A Mahjong Handbook" is the best; it is the most comprehensive and also well written, with an interesting part dedicated to luck, skill, offensive and defensive strategy. This book is VERY nice. Although, be sure to order a newer edition...

Re:Mahjong set + table
I also received an enquiry about tiles for an electronic table... was that you by any chance? Although I was interested in an electronic table, I decided I didn\'t want one right now. I think there was someone else on this thread that was interested in Tom\'s old one. Maybe he sent you the question...

Re:Mahjong set + table
You could just give them a reference sheet with the numbers on - and if you see them checking it a lot during a hand you know which suit not to discard! Hahaha that\'s sort of the way I plan on going. I searched in Chinatown, and I found an okay set. They\'re not the cheap plastic kind you ...
