Re: Looking for a new set
It looks like a nice set, and for 42 American (plus some significant shipping) it's definitely attractively priced. I love the broken English syntax on that page... "...but that the back of the black in a few decades ago seems to have been popular recently, is very small type." BTW, please don't cal...

Re: Looking for a new set
My wife and I have totally enjoyed the ownership of our Take Set, now over a year old, but I can't help but experience a bit of envy when I watch the Japanese Riichi sessions available to watch on YouTube - those sets are thicker and the designs are sharper. I realize they are the sets that work wit...

Re: New terminology and rules guide available
Looks good, Bart! I'll be sure to print it out and have four copies for my next session.

Re: Help a newbie find a good cost efficient set
It's hard to make the right choice of a first set, but if you're committed to playing the Japanese game, by all means make the investment and spend the money. A quality mahjong set will last beyond your lifetime and deliver great joy.

Re: Help a newbie find a good cost efficient set
If I hadn't obtained a Take set and I was looking to buy one now, the YMI white/yellow set would be the way I'd go. In the U.S., Riichi sets are a niche market, a market dominated by American style and Chinese sets. There aren't many options. The Take set is beautiful and durable - we've dropped til...

Re: Players' placement - Seating at the table
I realize that the country that evolved the Tea Ceremony would have an elaborate system to determine seat positions, but as my ancestors are my witness, I've seen those old movies with my hero, Kentaro Shimizu, or Shimizu Kentaro or some-such, and I swear I saw four dudes in suits simply pick a face...

Re: Players' placement - Seating at the table
1. Take one of each wind tile and place face down.
2. Shuffle.
3. Everyone take a tile.
4. East chooses a seat and others sit accordingly.

Re: Riichi vs. Zung Jung
I have played with the Zung Jung rules and found much the same thing. You could do like the WSOM and skip the chicken hand. I also found the "everyone pays at least 30 points" rule problematic, since many hands won't be worth more than that. Having everyone pay regardless of who threw the winning t...

Riichi vs. Zung Jung
Who among you who plays Riichi regularly and also has played a significant amount of Alan Kwan's Zung Jung? I was intrigued by the simplication of his system but in one partial game (a two player with dummy hands) I didn't find it engaging. As an example, the one point "chicken hand" mechanism seems...

Re: New from YMI
The slipperiness is the combination of two things: the polish/finish and the fact that they are not square cornered prisms but soft-rounded boxes, losing yet even more surface to stack tiles. It can easily be imagined by those of us who have acquired the skill to build walls by grasping a row of 17...

Re: New from YMI
The black sets look intriguing, but we frequently play in less than ideal lighting and I'm wondering if that would be a problem as well. As White Dragons are blank on both sides in Riichi sets that are monochromatic, the issue of scratches over time marking these tiles when in the wall (light reflec...

Re: New from YMI
PS In other news, I'm very pleased to be able to (unofficially) announce that last night I finally finished writing my new guide to the rules and terminology of Japanese mahjong! :D Stay tuned for my formal announcement when the PDF is available for download... Good news! It seems that there could ...

Re: New from YMI
Thanks Bart! It's nice to have something newsworthy to add to the forum. I've played a lot of two player Riichi with my wife. Sadly, the couple we've often played mahjong with in the past (and the only opportunity we've had to play four player) have been enduring a medical crisis - the woman in the ...
