Re:Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

2dan? i think you are confusing 2kyuu with 2 dan (they are not nearly the same....) No, 2 dan is 2 dan - 460/800ish, R1718 (or 1781, I don\'t have the client on this PC) Which "Japanese WWYD pages" are you speaking of? Thanks for the link, Barticle! I read the Osa stuff, going through the other thi...

Re:Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

Tom! You have always helped me when it came to Mahjong. If you could recommend ONE Japanese book - preferably one with lots of pictures and/or conciseness (i.e. \"see this? ditch the 5, because blah blah\", not \"today I went to the market and bought shoes. Who buys shoes at the market? Seriously, t...

Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?

Whitney\'s Handbook is great for turning a complete new player into a \'discard-based-on-better-waits-for-fast-hands\' offensive player, and \'that 8 is safe so maybe this 5 is\' defensive player: which I consider \'one step above complete beginner\'. - 568 ditch 8 - 12 vs 57 ditch 12 since 57 can b...

So, you have a 4 and 30 (pre-reach) hand. Reach?

Here\'s what I\'m getting at: You have, for example, closed tan-pin-san, which is 4 han and 30 fu(or 5 han for the tsumo). Reach makes this 5 or 6. Assuming you are playing against regularly defensive players (i.e. they won\'t deal in), would you reach hoping for the tsumo or a dora to make it a han...

Re:To Reach or Not To Reach

if no one else has reached / no one is going for all pins, 5p out and reach. agreed. reach-san-pin is 4, and the 5p isn\'t connected to my wait at all.

If you choose not to reach, should you still ron?

Examples - A: You\'ve got a pinfu-only hand, with a pesky 789 keeping you away from the tanyao. boo. B: tanyao-dora hand, but a 4-6 inner wait. boo again. So, you think in both cases, \"Hey, I won\'t reach, look how much better this hand can get!\" so you don\'t reach. But then, you 1. draw the tile...

Turning newbies into 'ok' players - list of hints?

Here\'s what I mean: I\'m helping a fledgling mahjong club in the area get on their feet, providing playspace, tiles, etc. I\'ve taught a number how to play, but I\'m not very good at saying \'why\' certain strategies are good, and because of that, I feel they are all learning strategy through trial...

Re:When, exactly, is the new dora shown on a kan?

1. Right. It would be inconvenient in that case to discard before flipping the kan dora indicator, so don\'t. (^_^) So, is there a standard answer to the "flip before discard" / "flip after discard" question? I see both all the time. (and, while I\'m at it, open pinfu / open tanyao) I know people p...

Re:When, exactly, is the new dora shown on a kan?

The precise split-second timing of turning the kan dora indicator over (before or after taking the replacement tile, before or after the kan player\'s discard) is little more than a matter of convenience and happenstance. I\'m not sure I agree with that. If it is flipped before discard, it could ha...

When, exactly, is the new dora shown on a kan?

Is it flipped before the discard? After? Does it matter if you draw it yourself / take it from another discard / \'upgrade\' a pon? Sorry for a possibly silly question as my first post, but it seems that I can\'t find an answer, and on tenhou, I seem to see it before a discard when I draw into it, a...
