Re:Open Tanyao

Why won\'t I play closed tan\'yao? Because without open tanyao, what do I do? To me, not calling for tiles is like a woman sitting and waiting for Prince Charming instead of going out and trying to find a guy. Hell, why not a house rule stating that all hands , not just tanyao, must be concealed, if...

In some house rules, there is a \"ron on riichi\" yaku, actually.

Re:Hey hey just a shout out. & 'kyushukyuhai'

For the 3-player game (reduced tileset), the odds become 1 in 54.6470, again, if neither my spreadsheet program nor I have made a mistake.

Re:Hey hey just a shout out. & 'kyushukyuhai'

The odds of 14 tiles randomly chosen from the set including at least 9 different terminals/honors is (if I got the spreadsheet math right) 1 chance in 309.1851 -- but, in terms of the actual game, that is just the odds for East having the opportunity to declare this type of draw, not the odds that t...

Re:Linguistics of Mahjong

From personal experience: - When teaching beginners, the tiles should have Western-style indices. This is because mahjong is just a game, not a necessary life skill, and the person you are trying to teach is likely to get discouraged if you throw too much at them too soon. Also, if you just want to ...

Solar eclipse!

Apparently, there will be a solar eclipse Wednesday in Asia. From what I gather, in Japan it will be a partial eclipse, but it will be almost total in southern Japan. It will be greatest just before 11 am Japan time, if I am reading this right.

Re:New Player. A few questions, for now, haha.

Unfortunately, the Flash game (I assume you mean the one at gamedesign.jp) does not show the number of tiles left in the wall. It is useful to know that the round ends after 70 discards, not counting discards used as part of a meld.

Reach mahjong: the only way to play

Why do I play reach mahjong, rather than some other kind of mahjong?

Okay. Try looking on the internet for places where you can play some other kind of mahjong, or downloadable mahjong games. You just might conclude that reach mahjong really is the only way to play.

Re:Oh... wait.

There is a difference between waiting on a tile that has already been discarded and waiting on a tile that does not exist in the set of tiles you are playing with (as we all know, a standard mahjong set includes only 4 of each tile).

No. As a joker, you could use it to stand in for whatever tile you please, which makes it extremely valuable.
