Re: How to explain the yaku
If Tenhou says it doesn't stack, then I'll go with Tenhou :P To get properly into the definitions gets a bit messy. I guess if you want 100% clarification then the definitions will be set out in a way that means there's no potential for confusion, and will say that Chanta and Honroutou don't stack, ...

Re: How to explain the yaku
Senechal, you should revise your post, given that I revised mine ;) Though interesting that you brought up Chinitsu with that example, given that I've personally always viewed it as being three han, and then an included +2 or +3 because of Honitsu, depending on whether it's open or closed, to bring ...

Re: How to explain the yaku
Hmm, so after some research, according to Tenhou Honroutou doesn't include Chanta, in which case, fair enough, I was wrong. http://arcturus.su/rondb/entry.pl?id=d9a80d32b568b98cf9a77eaee8bc50eb Still, I find it a bit odd because it means Honroutou isn't really a disctinct yaku, or at least it offers...

Re: Let's Start Again
Honroutou is actually a total of 4 http://reachmahjong.com/en/2007/11/in-garthes-hands-16-all-terminals-all-terminals-and-honors/ ; I'm quite sure Tenhou shows it as 混老頭 2 対々和 2 It's six, because it's impossible to get Honroutou with chi in the hand, which means it's also going to be seven pairs or...

Re: Let's Start Again
Honroutou and Chanta do not stack. As one allows runs/sequences, while the other is entirely sets. Of course they stack. How could you possibly get Honroutou (all terminals/honours) without getting Chantaiyao (each meld contains a terminal/honour tile) as a prerequisite? The fact that one allows ru...

Re: Let's Start Again
Though it's a minor point, if I were to explain the yaku I'd explain Ryanpeikou as 1 han (plus the two Iipeikou, total 3 han) Personally I'd explain it as 1+1+1, indicating accumulative han. Same for Honroutou, which I'd class as 2+2+2 closed, or 1+2+2 open (for Chantaiyao, Toitoi and Honroutou res...

Re: Let's Start Again
FAQ1 you're furiten, FAQ2 you're yaku nashi! Personally I'd have the 1 and 2 the other way around ;) I personally don't see much wrong with the site, except for perhaps a bit of abraisiveness and arrogance from some of the more experienced players. Lay off the beginners and intermediates guys, none...

Re: Where to Get Mah Jong Mats
It's a bit out there, but have you considered making your own? It might take a bit of effort, but all you need is some felt and basic materials you can get pretty cheap at a hardware store, and you're most of the way there.

Re: Reading discards?
Also playing the mini game on Saki's website I wouldn't try and infer anything strategically from that thing. In my experience it's biased up to give ridiculous hands, and the AI is pretty weird. I'll add properly to discussion later, but just a point for now that what you can infer from discards i...

Re: My hand of the week
Yeah it is, though the 8000 points is usually a fairly weak consolation for whatever hand you could have had if you'd kept them allcavemaneca wrote: not sure, but is that where you win a hand just for having discarded only terminals and honors?

Re: "Hand Must Be Concealed"
Rosti: San Ankou. San Ankou is three closed pon. Suu Ankou is four closed pon. Ah, my bad. The webpage I was using as a reference has it listed with the incorrect name then. I generally use the English names, so I'm not completely up to scratch on the Japanese ones. Plus it's hardly a common yaku :P

Re: Riichi dec. and rinchan kaihou
When you've got the kan in your hand you wouldn't be in tenpai, so wouldn't it be an invalid riichi anyway? If you were somehow in tenpai then the kan would inevitably change your wait, so it still wouldn't be valid. I also think the fact that you get your 1000 points back if someone calls ron off t...

Re: "Hand Must Be Concealed"
Ii Pei Kou still counts if you ron to complete the second set. Ii Pei Kou requires the hand to be closed. Sou An Kou and Suu An Kou required the pon to be closed. You can get Sou An Kou (three closed pon) with a hand that is open. If you have three closed pon and, say, an open chi, then you'll still...

Re: "Hand Must Be Concealed"
If you ron, providing your hand was concealed up until then, it is still considered concealed (ron would give you weakly closed, tsumo would give you strongly/fully closed, which is another yaku in itself). That is to say that yaku which must be concealed such as pinfu (pointless/all chi) and Ii Pei...
