Problem with Pinfu
Last night my wife and I are playing one of our half-game, two player contests. She has melded a pon of red and kan of green dragons, so my need to tsumo or ron is quite desperate. I riichi on a closed wait (I need an 8-dot and none have been played - good bet!) and sure enough, the dummy to my righ...

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
After two months of ownership... The problem with the Take Set is that I have no desire to play with the three other Mahjong sets I own - makes me wish I had bought the Take first, but then again, it was a discovery process that brought about the appreciation of Riichi Mahjong, and the small tiles t...

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
5 - 10,000 point sticks (one extra) 9 - 5000 point sticks (one extra) 39 - 1000 points sticks (three extra?) 42 - 100 point sticks (two extra) I like these the best since I am a "Fresh Reacher." You appear to be passing yourself off as a Junior Reacher now! I know, and I am not worthy of an...

Re:Black
If Mahjong sets were female models the typical Chinese set would be a woman in a colorful summer dress while the Japanese set would be a business woman clad in a serious, dark blue pinstripe suit. I have both and prefer the formal, dignified look of the Japanese sets. Having said that, a truly green...

Wow, another rule (that I have been blissfully unaware) to share and observe. When will it end? :angry:Shirluban wrote:

Double Dora Darling
Last night during an evening of Mahjong a 2nd dora indicator was turned over that matched the first. We assumed that this would double the fan points awarded for that dora tile.
True?

Re:The Take Set -
I think almost all sets are produced in China? I just had a double check of all my sets and all of them appear to have been made there all with varying degree of quality. I suspect that the quality level demanded by different markets makes a difference to what gets exported. I did see a documentary...

Re:The Take Set -
There is no question that Japanese manufacturing standards are considered to be better than Chinese standards...the Chinese tend to be a bit sloppy with their quality control at times. I have written of my initial impressions of my Take Set in a previous thread, and after using it extensively I\'ve ...

The Take Set - "Made in China"
I am not sure why I had not noticed it before, but on the cardboard box that contains my Take Set there are only three English words amidst all the Japanese writing: Made in China Yikes! I thought I was getting a set of Japanese manufacture...could it be that only the box was printed in China? Proba...

Re:Riichi yaku/scoring quick reference.
I\'m new at this, but my way of explaining the difference between yaku and han is that all yaku is han but not all han is yaku. The subtle difference is lost on a cave man like me. Yaku is what you have in your hand. Han is what you will get on your scoresheet because of the yaku that you have in y...

Re:Riichi yaku/scoring quick reference.
You might want to change Ippatsu and Double Reach too (although Ippatsu is a Yaku in its own right). Again; it\'s really not, but it\'s obvious you people don\'t care. Should I? I\'m new at this, but my way of explaining the difference between yaku and han is that all yaku is han but not all han is...

Re:Riichi yaku/scoring quick reference.
Hi Gg. A few quick thoughts - rapidly running out of lunchbreak! Chanta, etc, should be +1 Han rather than +1 Yaku (Chanta is one Yaku worth 1 or 2 Han). You might want to change Ippatsu and Double Reach too (although Ippatsu is a Yaku in its own right). Two yaku or two han makes no differe...
