Re: Analysis: Mauro's Games - 02
Ah, sorry, I didn't understand what your hand was like! My bad. Guess I shouldn't have answer without actually watching your game.

Re: Analysis: Mauro's Games - 02
Sorry, I can't see your game but this looks like a big mistake in tile efficiency, something you may want to work on: 5: maybe discard 4-dot, since 5-dot already makes a group with 6-dot 7-dot, while 9-bam let me use 8-bam. If I understand correctly, you had 4-dot 5-dot 7-dot 8-dot and you're thinki...

Re: Defending strategy: suji
tl;dr: sujis work to some extent but are far from perfect. Refrain from using them if possible, if you don't have a choice they're better than nothing. Omote suji, which si the most most basic type of suji allowing to identify potentially safe tiles without this much effort, feel like they definitel...

Re: Four pairs to four triplets
I don't have data but my rule of thumb would be that a hand with 4 pairs early in the game has a pretty good chance to end as 7 pairs. I wouldn't call for a triplet until later in the game and I really need the points. If I manage to get a hidden triplet I'll usually hold on to it as it shortens the...

Re: Tileset with translation?
Westerner sets often come in this fashion (although the full word isn't written, only the first letter. There is an ever going debate about the pros and cons of these tiles versus starting with unmarked tiles, though...

Re: Mahjong video
We made another one ! https://youtu.be/qygSpkEjmnw The quality of the commentary is a bit down (although it's probably gonna be unnoticed here :D ), due to the fact that we were not as numerous and that the workflow we used this time made it more difficult to make out the game during recording, but ...

Re: open pinfu (jumbo shrimp)
When I teach mahjong, I don't mention the "open pinfu 2 fus" which are indeed confusing. Instead i say that the 20 fus line is only for pinfu tsumo and pinfu tsumo always get 20 hand (regardless of what other yakus are included), and anything else's starts at 30. In other words: "if you don't see an...

Re: Mahjong video
Thanks for your feedback and your enthusiasm! Barticle, you're right, I perfectly forgot about those wind markers but they'd be really useful! We'll add them in the next video. About the readability of the tiles, that will be partially taken care of when we can do a 4-camera setup (hopefully for the...

Mahjong video
Marseille, France's Chuuren potos club shot its first game! Sorry for offering only two camera angles, our fourth camera became unavailable at the last minute! Also please keep in mind it's a first for us, players and narrators, but we aim at getting better and better!

Re: Mahjong video guide
Iapetus, you're right, in order to keep things clear I took a few liberties with the Japanese translations (and some other things). I wanted players who play video games to have a chance to recognize the yakus in the list after you win, and in the game I was playing at the time they only wrote menze...

Re: Our first tournament - questions.
I think in this situation the best would be to put two stools at each table on opposite corners so that players can put tile racks with tenbo inside. Granted, it's not as convenient as the junk mat trays, but nothing is worst than counting with pen and paper in my opinion! The main problem is that i...

Re: Mahjong video guide
Thanks for the feedback! I'm especially forgetful of mahjong english terminology since I mostly speak of mahjong in French! I'll write down all the corrections and bulk edit the subtitles sometime soon. As for future plans for videos, there are, but it shouldn't be about strategy --at least not befo...

Mahjong video guide
Hi everyone! A few months ago I made a series of videos to teach mahjong to newcomers, since written explanations are usually pretty long and hard to follow. I didn't mention it here because it's all in French, but I just added some english subtitles, so if anyone's interested they're here: https://...

Re: Our first tournament - questions.
Resetting the score makes it more spectacular and thrilling. You can't count on your +200 lead, you have to earn your points again!
