Re:Expert Strategies
Are mahjong strategies universal? Like are there any general strategies that are almost the same no matter which style your playing? There are huge changes in strategy based on the variant you\'re playing, so I\'d say few strategies are universal. For example, if you let an opponent ron off your di...

Re:mahjongtime hand question
I can see a couple reasons why: If you didn\'t Riichi, then I think you don\'t have any yaku. I\'m not sure how MahjongTime displays a Riichi, though - I don\'t see a rotated discard, but I also see some other nonstandard indication methods, particularly the tile placement for a kan. Secondly, I ass...

Yup, that\'s definitely a failure to connect to the update server. Chances are either their server was down, or you have a firewall or other security program blocking the connection. Check your firewall, adblockers, and anything else that might mistakenly block your connection and try again.

Re:9 or more terminals orhonor tiles
I\'ve actually declared the Kyuushuu Kyuuhai abortive draw on Tenhou multiple times for strategic reasons. For one, the trouble with going for Kokushimusou is that it\'s quite likely you won\'t even be tenpai at the end if you fail. Let\'s say it\'s oorasu (the last hand of the match) and you\'re th...

Re:Score this hand
It depends on which tile East discarded, because for Sanankou (and Suuankou), if you ron to complete a koutsu, that does not count as an ankou. Thus, if East discarded a 9-bam for her to ron, she would have chin\'iisou (5) + sanankou (2) = 7 han, haneman, 12,000 points. But if East discarded a 6-bam...

Re:Jan Ryu Mon
Considering that in the short time I played Jan Ryu Mon, it gave me enough error messages to make me think the game was programmed by a team of drunken monkeys, it\'s hard to tell what the error is based on where you\'re encountering it. The big red button alone has given me at least three different...

Re:Lurker peeks in...
Believe it or not, tvtropes has a decent intoduction page: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Mahjong . It gives a good overview, without being too technical. (At least, I think so. Heh, I actually started and wrote most of that article - see the page history if you don\'t believe me. I\'m ...

Re:Hey hey just a shout out. & 'kyushukyuhai'
No, i started to play online on tenhou and then transferred on JanRyuMon. What\'s weird is that for a whole month i got good results (1-2° place) and then now seems like i can\'t get those results again... even though my attack improved. :( I\'m quite late on this, but back in late August or so, I ...

Re:how did you learn about mahjong?
Well, I first learned about Mahjong at a family gathering where 4 of my aunts and uncles started up a game, of the Taiwanese variant. I ended up watching, and they explained the rules to me. After which I promptly lost interest a couple weeks later because A: when my cousins left, I didn\'t have 3 o...

Re:Pseudo-random number generator
I think Shirluban\'s main point is, there aren\'t many truly random events that can be conveniently used in everyday activities. Try making a Mahjong game that shuffles the tiles based on radioactive decay or random noise, and without breaking the bank for specialized hardware. (And no using Random....

Re:Dead Wall Question
From a computer science standpoint, generating the full wall first would be far preferable to rolling for the next tile every time a tile is drawn. It actually takes a considerable amount of processing to generate a random number in a way such that all possibilities are equally likely. For example, ...

Re:Two quick/random questions (kanji and wait types)
I\'m not sure, but I suspect \"sonota\" (other) might be for things like Kokushimusou 13-sided wait. In several thousand hands on MFC DS, I have yet to see a single hand categorized under \"other\", but my aunt has a copy of the game and she\'s gotten it exactly once, having played way more matches ...

Re:When, exactly, is the new dora shown on a kan?
The Japanese Wikipedia actually makes a mention of this - there are two common methods, depending on the house rules:
1. Kan-dora is revealed before the discard, no matter what.
2. Kan-dora is revealed before the discard for a closed kan; revealed after the discard for an open kan.
