Re: Rinshan Kaihô and the Tsumo Fu

Bit tangent but I have yet to see any real-life setting that enforces pao for rinshan kaihou ;-)

Re: WWYD Jigoku

Is that from a real situation? Man, mahjong can be painful sometimes. Anyway, assuming I'm in a setting where you can't discard north or the game would be cancelled, I'd go with hatsu, if I can climb back to ryuu isou it's perfect but if not I got a clear shot at chinitsu tanyao, which is not bad at...

Re: Discard Backfire

True story: the player across from me has already stolen a chun triplet. Somebody discards a hatsu, he steals it and discards haku. Next turn, haku tsumogiri, he seems a bit restless. Next turn... Haku tsumogiri! I think I saw a tear in his eyes :D

Re: Differences between real life and online mahjong?

OR, if you want to be a dick about it, you may argue that on most sets the white dragon and the two dots are the only tiles that are really exactly the same upside-down, since on most sets dots and bamboos are not rotationally symetric! Dots have a kind of white decoration and bamboos have a kind of...

Re: Haneman Hunters club games

About one night to get the rushes in the right format and ready for editing, when the editing is done about three hours to get a big file in the native format and one more hour to get a h.264 version. It's not HD yet, though. And in the meantime there is also an intermediate version with all the POV...

Re: okkake riichi

It seems to me the biggest aspect is the psychological impact. After all, there is almost no situation where the gain of declaring riichi overweights the possible risk (except some special cases where you definitely need points/renchan and don't have a yaku). The 2 other players will have a stronger...

Re: Logical fallacies & Mahjong

It's true that it's fun to discover things by yourself, but it's also a bit slower, and since we don't have an infinite amount of time (yet), that may be a limit to how strong you're gonna get as a player (whereas if you start where other left off, you get a chance to go further!) I think the reason...

Re: Mahjong video

I think the commentary was pretty good. It would be great to see more amibuguous situations next time, if such occur :) Thanks! Actually we were a bit disappointed when we saw the raw video, the player didn't have luck for most of the game... You know, the kind of games when you're tempted to put a...

Re: Logical fallacies & Mahjong

It's hard to say for sure since we're talking about things that are very difficult to judge and let alone measure, but it feels like some players can reach a respectable level without having a naturally analytical thinking. In my club some players more often than not make what I'd judge to be approp...

Re: Mahjong video

Here's a now video where you can see how a player plays a deal, with some comments: https://youtu.be/sR1uyTPs1JQ It's not a high level commentary but is rather intended as a way for beginners to get a feel of what you may be asking yourself when playing mahjong. It's hard to know what to talk about ...

Re: Differences between real life and online mahjong?

If you plan on calling you can also organize your tiles in a fashion that isolates the group you'll form, sometimes you can get a pretty good idea of what's inside the hand depending on what's left standing. We were playing today so I took the opportunity to take a picture, if somebody discards a 2...
