Re: Was it too reckless to riichi?

Riichi increases your chances for tsumo Not sure what you mean here: how come doing riichi increases the chance for tsumo? I believe your doubts are dictated by hindsight bias - don't fall for that. Yes, you eventually dealt in but the only thing that counts when analyzing a decision is THE very mo...

Riichi in end round with a bad wait

This is a hand I saw playing: East 1, 0 continuance, you are dealer and about to make your 15th discard; this is your hand: 2-crak 3-crak 4-crak 3-dot 4-dot 5-dot 8-dot 8-dot 9-dot 6-bam 6-bam 7-bam 7-bam draw: 8-bam dora: 4-dot In the ponds you can see three 5-bam and two 8-bam, so your wait is bad...

Re: WWYD 2015-09-14

I wouldn't pon 9-crak: I'd prefer to be able to defend better, and I don't like the idea of starting toitoi so late in the game without triplets; I would remain open for chii toitsu, which is nice, and if I draw 5-crak or 8-crak I'm tenpai (albeit I'm not sure I'd riichi, with one 1-dot and one 9-cr...

Re: WWYD 2011/09/28

On the topic question I think I'd go with 1-bam: it leaves me open for chii toitsu and toitoi, and leaves me with 4455, which is good in case I have to go with sequences.

Was it too reckless to riichi?

South 1, I'm in first place with a not so good lead on second, but a pretty good lead on third and fourth; seven winning tiles still out there, four of which dora, but with no dora discarded could be hard for someone to risk it. Also, not so much pin discarded, I'm waiting on pin, and toimen seems t...

Re: riichi mahjong scoring app

Cool, I'll tell it to my friend!

Edit: nice for the waits; I'm not sure he knows this, I'll tell him.

Re: riichi mahjong scoring app

I have only used the web version, but a friend of mine uses the app (and used it with me at the table), and as far as I saw it it's good; the only thing to take care of is to input the winning tile as last. So, if your winning hand is 1-crak 2-crak 3-crak 3-dot 4-dot 5-dot 7-dot 8-dot 9-dot 2-bam 3-...

What would you discard?

The playerd discarded 4-bam, waiting on 6-crak 9-crak 3-dot 6-dot for the last group, then tanki wait on 4-dot waiting for a better wait; he drew 6-bam and riichied. I was thinking about 8-crak, waiting for 3-dot 6-dot for the last group and 4-bam 7-bam for the pair. (In the end we both would have g...

Re: Do you riichi?

You're right, I think I was short on time and I didn't noticed it; as for open tanyao, I was playing without it.

Re: Guide to ranking up on tenhou

Just finished to read this, I was wondering about the risk table: I found a coupla of them before reading yours, and what struck me is you place yakuhai you can see one or two of higher than double suji 456 and other suji. Also given that you placen yakuhai waits at the same level as double sided, I...

Do you riichi?

http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2015091216gm-008f-0000-69bb69ba&tw=1 South 2: in the fifth step I was tenpai, waiting on 2-bam (three out) and 8-bam (three out); it wasn't a good wait, I was first with a good lead on third and fourt, so also to not lose the chance to defend I choose not to riichi, and both...

Re: Defending strategy: suji

Thanks for clarifying the terminology :D By saying "basic suji" I was referring to omote-suji, but I didn't knew the term (I saw it called suji-pai, but I'm not sure if it refers just to that or what).

Re: Discard quiz from strategy book (riichi edition)

I see both or2az and Iapetus would go for shanpon over ryanmen or penchan; why's that? I can kinda understand penchan (same number of tiles, more tile types), but I was wondering about ryanmen.
