Played at Machao in Shinjuku!
Just got back from three weeks in Japan. Played for the first time in a Jansou (Machao in Shinjuku, Non-Smoking!). It was fantastic, definitely recommend it to anyone who gets the chance. Freaked everyone out with a Suu Ankou tenpai on my first ever turn, but that was probably the high point! Handli...

Re:Mahjong Video Games -
Just a side note: I think it\'s very difficult (if not impossible) to become good by playing against AI. It\'s much easier than playing against skilled humans, and is also easier strategically. I also don\'t think that gamedesign\'s flash mahjong cheats. It\'s still easy to beat if you play well, it...

Are you used to playing against the computer? That could explain it- SO much harder playing against real opponents.

Re:Yakuman Club
I\'ve got four concealed triples several times and big three dragons once or twice.
All online versus human players.
I\'ve also gotten ryanpeikou and sanshoku doukou which are both rarer than yakumans.

Re:What Would You Discard August 1st
I agree with July. Discard the bams and call tiles for a honitsu-haku-dora. Should be an easy mangan.
Only way I might consider a different approach is if the player on my left isn\'t throwing any man tiles at all.

Re:How to read discards
I\'m sure a lot of people will help you out around here. My two cents are: focus on attacking. i.e. how to make the best discards to complete your hand. use the best waits and make as many two-sided ones as possible, discard honors and terminals, etc. do as many WWYD questions as you can find. count...

Re:How to read discards
Gezzar: It\'s actually not that hard to notice the hand discards, especially in real life or a site like Janryumon where you can see the slower-paced movement of the tiles. Bear in mind you don\'t need to be watching them constantly, just keep and eye on suspicious opponents, especially mid-late gam...

Re:How to read discards
Good site. Just remember there\'s one key thing not mentioned there: You can only read ura/matagi/senki suji and such from discards that came from the hand. You sometimes need to keep an eye on whether tiles are discarded on the draw or not, because that gives them a different meaning. The furiten s...

On the left is \'tonpuusen\' i.e. quarter game, one round, east only, whatever you want to call it.
On the right is \'hanchan\' i.e. half game, two rounds, east-south, etc.

Well, if you play online most sites automatically record your games.
Best way to learn.

Re:WWYD 6/27
The Toupaiou was over about 250 hanchan. I\'ve retired from serious online play now because my internet has started to disconnect randomly. It hit my account so much I pretty much gave up playing for rating. I also don\'t play on Toupaiou at all any more. Janryumon I\'m playing more for fun, althoug...
Re:WWYD 6/27
Responding to July: That MFC WWYD makes sense. You want to keep the 3-crak in case you draw the 2-crak dora. No point in keeping the 5-crak for a 5-crak 5-crak 6-crak 6-crak 7-crak 7-crak double run because it\'s worth the same as a dora but harder to make, and you risk giving up pinfu due to a sing...

Huh?
Where did you get that idea? Janki is just the name of the guy who started that ruleset.

Re:WWYD 6/20
I don\'t think it\'s all that bad as a starting hand. Poor shan-ten but decent flexibility.
I would fold it though unless it starts hotting up into mangan territory, and keep all the dot tiles.
