Re:Open Tanyao

I agree with what Morten said. :P Setting tournements with an alternate riichi rule than EMA is not a bad idea by itself. And anyone is free to do so, it will just not count for EMA ranking. But, IMHO, ye need ONE ruleset and only ONE to spread riichi in europe. Look at Chinese Official rules, they ...

Re:Saki and Riichi?

About the switching to the dead wall, isn\'t it kinda pointless to switch the tile to the deadwall when you can already win with that? No, no, no. It\'s not pointless. By doing that, you can : - score more thanks richan - win with a open no point hand, thanks rinchan - be catched and kicked out - a...

\"Darn, I don\'t win. At least I\'m the only one tenpai :silly: \"
\"What!? I have to pay? \"

Re:Open Tanyao

To be quick: Everyone (or almost) made good and pertinents comments. I don\'t have much to add about open tanyao. Just wanna say: @ Silent observer: If all you have to say is improper comments about what you\'ve misunderstood aboud Gemma and Tina said, you\'d better stay as your nick said. @ Gemma :...

Re:Mahjong Manners

Yes, when someone ron your riichi tile you don\'t loose your 1000 points bet.
IMHO, it\'s better to put the riichi stick on the table immediatly and not delay until the next player draws.
(It avoid to forget you have to bet.)

Re:missed win and final points

You mean if I\'ve riichi if i don\'t declare a ron, I can\'t win by ron forever in that hand, but if i don\'t riichi i can win after one turn passed? Yes. Two more things: 1) A turn is "passed" when you draw a tile or when someone claim a discard. Exemple: You are East, waiting for a 2pin. South di...

Re:Rules & Questioning

It\'s sankantsu toitoi.

A kan is a pon + one tile, so you can count a kan as a pon.
But an open set is not a closed set. You can NOT count an open kan/pon as a closed pon.

Re:Query re rules

I was also wondering what happens if one runs out of points? Does the game simply end? This is a "problem" only if you use scoring sticks. If you just write the score on a paper, it\'s ok to have a negative score. For gambling, ending the game when one goes out of points prevents gamblers to loose ...

Re:Saki and Riichi?

i believe any popular mangas or anime\'s can only be good for the game\'s exposure (particuarly amongst younger people). Perhaps the difference between saki and akagi is that akagi kind of perpetuated the perception that mahjong was played in shady places with yakuza, where as saki is that kind of ...

Re:Why isn't Tsumo Pinfu ever set as 2 Fan 30 Fu?!

I guess whoever made the decision about that rule was sticking to the idea that pinfu = no points. It\'s exatly that: pinfu is a no points hand, and not an all chow hand like many people believe. Just found a poll which is relevant to this post on mahjongnews.com. I suppose you are talking about th...

Re:Oh... wait.

A dead wait, i.e. when all exemplars of you winning tiles are already out, is ok. If you have 2-bam 3-bam 4-bam 2-crak 3-crak 4-crak 2-dot 3-dot 4-dot 7-bam 8-bam 8-dot 8-dot and all 6 and 9 bamboos are already discarded or used in melded sets, you are tenpai. BUT A hand who needs 5 exemplars of a t...

Re:handling of tiles

What happens if someone screams that there are fewer than 136 tiles visible? That depends. Do all the people in the room understand English? ARE there people in the room? If so, and they understand English, are they all insane? You can assume if there are people in a room and if they understant Eng...

Re:Difference between Japanese and Chinese set

In MCR you can choose to include or drop the flowers/seasons. Huh! I never heared MCR have optional parts. Even if flowers are useless in MCR, you need 8 of them. (Else, it\'s not MCR but a home rule.) just use the red fives as flowers with the included seasons. You already have to manage pl...

Re:Hikkake reach

Well, it\'s not a rule of the game, but there\'s a style of playing in Japan ("janki-ryu", I think?) where they take it on themselves to make discards in 3 seconds or less, never throw an honor on the first discard, never make a hikkake reach, and some other things. I can understand the 3 second di...
