Re: World Riichi Championship 2014 - rules!

The 3-second rule should be rewritten as follows: When a tile is discarded, the maximum window of opportunity for calling it is 3 seconds. Conflicting calls have a maximum of 0.5 seconds to be made after the first one. In the case of someone who calls in 0.8 seconds, another player has up to 1.3 sec...

Re: Who wins a tie game?

I'm pretty sure that common sense applies to that. If you were offended by the instance of the word "fucking" in that context, you can feel free to petition Shirluban or any of the mods to have it taken care of. The year is 2014, and this is not a site directed solely to children. When running a clu...

Re: Who wins a tie game?

Whoa, this was a full round and not sudden death ? I would like to know the general prevalence of a full-round played, because the old club in Montreal enforced that rule, and we scuttled it as soon as possible with the new club, because it was fucking up the ability to exchange players between game...

Re: another gameplay question

That hand, 133445*5689m678p... calling is almost universally bad unless you have to gun for chinitsu for a guaranteed haneman, at the expense of speed, concealment, etc. Ponning anything is bad here because of the drastic shanten drop. I mean, ideally, you would want to pick up a 7m to chuck 1m for ...

Re: World Riichi Championship 2014 - rules!

I just posted our observer report on Osamuko. http://osamuko.com/osamuko-com-observer-report-wrc2014/

This should cover most things, some small things were left out intentionally, namely explaining the 3-second rule imbroglio.

Re: World Riichi Championship 2014 - rules!

I dropped two tiles from an opponent's hand and that deserves the dead hand penalty.

There were some oppressive players out there though, dead hands being attributed without sufficient proof.

Re: Probability of being dealt ten tiles of one suit?

Choose refeers to stuff in combinatorics where out of Y tiles, you want X amount, "Y choose X" (usually written with two-line parthenses, Y on top of X) is a simplified mathematical representation of the factorial operations Y! / (X! * (Y-X)!). Each factorial number is the product of multiplying eve...

Re: Probability of being dealt ten tiles of one suit?

You have to set your exclusions. One suit vs rest. Second suit vs rest. Third suit vs rest. In my example, it then becomes : One suit and honours vs rest. Second suit and honours vs rest. Third suit and honours vs rest. In both cases you have to add those together, thus 3x. In the hon'itsu case, the...

Re: Probability of being dealt ten tiles of one suit?

I think the probability would be (3*(36 choose 10)*(100 choose 3))/(136 choose 13) =0.00025488... Or about 1 in 4000. Iapetus' number for chin'itsu-grade hands sounds good. Conversely, a hon'itsu hand of 10/13 tiles would be: (3*(64 choose 10)*(72 choose 3))/(136 choose 13) == 5.6 % (one in 19) How...

Re: World Riichi Championship 2014 - rules!

As an extra observation, thanks to osamu, there are 122 players currently registered. Are we gaining two more after, losing two, have two needed to be urgently replaced... I can't speculate as to why or how, all I know is that 122 doesn't divide into 4.

Re: WRC2014 schedule update

{I am not in any way affiliated with the WRC organization or rules committees and do not claim to represent them in any way. This is a statement of basic facts, followed by an opinion. Feather-ruffling is me and me alone.} There has been an e-mail sent out this morning to clarify the tournament stru...

Re: Severely in need of a japanese proofreading!

K10: there is a "riichi" written "ri i chi" when it should be ri-chi in katakana.
M29: "rokuhai ka issou" = Is that natural? I'm not going to pretend to pontificate, but wouldn't "rokuhai ijou" be a better option? Not necessarily saying you have to change above that to "gohai ika" but...

Re: Game-ending Draw

It depends on local rules. Usually, as mentioned previously, any spare riichi sticks go to the winner. This seems to be standard in club play and cash games. There are the occasional exceptions to the rule. The upcoming WRC in Puteaux (Paris area), France will not return riichi sticks to the winner ...

Re: Furiten question

Genbutsu is the general term for 100% safe tile, thus making genbutsu-kuikae the rule that allows swapping out everything. Calling 1+23s, throwing 1s, or 1+11s, throwing 1s. There is no way for anyone else to win off of it. It's considered too cheap to allow in cash games, but in competitive play, i...

Re: Furiten question

It could have been trolling. My apologies, I had a bit of a trolling experience on the receiving end earlier in the day. Didn't mean to transpose the situation, despite the possibility of such genuinely existing. New newer edit: there is a fifth option, again from Yazphier. If the game allows kuikae...
