Re:Portable options .... Mahjong Cards?
Thanks all I picked up the ones from jenns shop ... thay are quite small, somewhat thinner than others I\'ve seen but they do come in study plastic boxes. They also have card holders that stand up by themselves. One of the other benefits is that at least they can be shuffled well in confined space. ...

Re:Help in identifying an oddity
So you cant date kabu and hana I wasn\'t attempting to date them at the same time. We do not know which came first of these two BUT We do know however, the pasteboard cards post date the trade with the portugese and therefore kabufuda and hanafuda must BOTH post date the portugese In the same vein,...

Re:handling of tiles
However, practising flipping over all your tiles together (by neatly arranging each tile perfectly in the row) will stop you looking stupid when you draw that menzen tsumo completing tile and flip over your bamboo tiles to have them scatter! Times like that when you are hoping to look the skillful p...

Re:Rules & Questioning
claiming 3 kans is the result of 3 explicit kan melds. Actually, there are three ways to have a kong: 1. Melding a pung into a kong as you describe 2. Extending a Melded pung into a kong and 3. drawing 4 identical tiles, declaring it as a CONCEALED Kong and placing it aside on the table (most japan...

Re:DVD-->Youtube
Copyright issues aside for now Unless the videos are quite small you may hit the 10 minute limit on youtube. If this is an issue then consider putting them on google video that does not have those issues. Many videos you find in multiple pieces on youtube are found in a single video on google. Copyr...

Re:Oh... wait.
I\'d agree with this definition. Tenpai is based upon your remaining tiles ... are you waiting on one tile to go out? It does not take into account already played/discarded tiles You can even reach by mistake where the only tiles you can go out on are safely discarded. I got caught out by this onlin...

Re:Difference between Japanese and Chinese set
BTW You can also play Modern Chinese (MCR) rules on most Japanese sets (the vast majority of Japanese sets I have seen all have 4 seasons/4 red fives or in the case of pre-aka-dora sets have 4 seasons/4 flowers .... these latter sets were common in the 70s but seem to be rare nowadays - partially du...

Re:Rules & Questioning
ryan peiko mix with chitoitsu No .... because in chiitoitsu you are creating a series of 7 special sets of pairs and to claim ryan peiko you would have to break up those sets (Chii toitsu is effectively a low scoring special hand consisting of special sets of pairs ... in a similar fashion to Koku ...

Re:Difference between Japanese and Chinese set
Yes you can play Riichi with a Chinese set. All you need to do is ditch the flowers and seasons. http://www.mahjongmart.com/shop/images/A0001-A.jpg You will not get the rectangular Oya marker but you can easily use the Chinese wind marker remembering only to use East :east then South :south. Or you ...

Hence, partially, the requirement to rotate the discard to indicate who threw it (though why MCR rotates the tiles is a mystery as there is no furiten)wyce wrote:3. If you discard a 9 pin and somebody chi or pon that 9 pin, does that 9 Pin act as one of your furiten tiles?

Re:Rules & Questioning
1. I always thought the dead wall has to be replenished with an addition tile, but if there are no tiles left how does that work? Tiles are not replenished in Riichi There are four kan tiles and if the fourth is declared (EXCEPTION BELOW) then the hand is declared dead. EXCEPTION: If all four kans ...

Re:Combining MCR and Riichi (a thought experiment)
I think you should consider playing MCR and riichi, each has it\'s own merits. That\'s certainly the route I have taken. I play Riichi online and with my brother. I play MCR with the kids .... I have yet to find a MCR online that is (1) free and (2) easy to use, popular and not full of robots. Any ...
