Re:Hey hey just a shout out. & 'kyushukyuhai'
No quite .. you missed the restriction. As Jenn said ... if you are holding 9 different terminals and honors Then on your turn you may declare it after you have drawn your FIRST tile providing nobody has called and melded a tile set (chi, pon, kong). The other players are allowed to pick and discard...

Re:East Only Games
It\'s certainly a tactic often seen in contract bridge ... go for the lowest-risk minimum-success to ensure an overall win. I can see this happening a lot in social games and those tournaments operated in a first-past-the-post-win style like a tennis tournament. A tournament that runs on the basis o...

Re:Help in identifying an oddity
which you gave not to assert that Chinese mahjong ALWAYS uses 144 tiles I meant the standard set (yes there are a number of variants akin to dialects in languages which probably occurred due to certain house rules becoming very popular e.g. Szechuan Style Mahjong) compared to the differences betwee...

Re:Hikkake reach
I guess if your playing janki-ryu with 3 second discards then deliberately performing an hikkake reach could cheese some people off as they are having to consider their discards with very little lead time

Re:Bluffing Column on Front Page
Another thing: If even silent bluffing is considered impolite (which I\'m not sure we have a clear answer on yet), why is draw-switching considered OK? I find that far more \'unsportsmanlike\' if you want to call it that. Draw-switching (as shown towards the 1 minute mark in this video http://www.y...

Re:Bluffing Column on Front Page
Thinking about some of the moves discussed in this thread here are some of the odd habits I find myself performing. Maybe I am getting paranoid, .... but it is a very common practice in Bridge (contract/duplicate) to not only card count but pay attention to the exact position where the opponents dra...

And here is Sakurai Shouichi, one of the most famous players in Japan, showing a set-up techique Anybody still wondering if the development of automatic mahjong tables is laziness? I must admit this is the fastest finger reading of the tiles I\'ve seen. Normally, it\'s impressive when you w...

Re:Combining MCR and Riichi (a thought experiment)
When switching to MCR from Riichi I find that the transition is relatively seamless until I notice a situation which would be Furiten and then I have to concentrate a lot harder on the MCR game to keep the Riichi rules clear of my head allowing me to play. Of all the rules I miss the Furiten rule th...

Re:Instant Regret!
Nice hand! I\'m assuming you didn\'t reach... the hand was not closed, right? Did you have a chance to Pon the West and go for a nice single wait Toi-Toi? How did the rest of the game play out? white-drawhite-drawhite-dra and :west:west self drawn The :west:west were the only west tiles remaining, ...

Re:Instant Regret!
I am wondering how many others have had similar experiences of, or formal terms for, discarding a tile...and then almost immediately wishing it back Just had a run earlier today of that, frequently frustrated, getting ready well in advance of the third row hand after hand ... only to be pipped at t...

VPN 101 Typically vpn clients tunnel all internet traffic through the vpn. The traffic will travel to the vpn server and go out from there. If the vpn server has a slower connection (or more heavily used) than your personal broadband connection then you will see a marked drop in throughput. Are you ...

It still makes some odd translations with non-european languages particularly asian languages with symbols like kanji that may not translate 1-for-1
