Re: Why did this end?

Echoing that statement, other people who have went to Japan and played consistently were not bound by those statistics, which originate from hakata21. A new set of statistics, should be aggregated, and if humanly possible, weighted against their relevance. Some of the hakata21 references have been s...

Re: Maujon: How is this Furiten?

South threw 3p post-riichi. So it's a furiten issue, not the more complicated atozuke thing.

3p thrown : Hand worth 1300. "eew".
Later...
9p thrown : Oh boy, I can score 5200... or not. You're in permanent furiten the moment the 3p slipped by.

I guess I left that out. 100% legal. A regular website with tons of shows, actor biographies, and viewer comments. This is the drama side of kissanime.com where I watched all the Saki animes. {attachments} Legality isn't determined by "ability to access in HTTP". Given what you showed as a list of ...

Re: Just a quick question...

They're chucking their hands because the live commentator can see both sides and seems to tell them around the 6th discard that there's no point going to 17+ discards.

Mercy rule for viewers. Watching people play useless hands will grate on people fast.

Re: WRCR rules: The good, the bad, and the [bleep]

To be fair, pointing to a reference majoritarily written by myself (edit: not that specific list, but it was built from an IRC list in the past and the editing rules are elsewhere on the wiki) merits a bit more scrutiny than to simply call it a gold standard. But there are people who oppose some of ...

Re: WRCR rules: The good, the bad, and the [bleep]

As long as criticism can be heard, expressed, exchanged and compared upon, then we're heading in the right direction. In the past, the common response was delete, block, and deny legitimate criticism {regardless of venue} if it ruffled the wrong person's feathers or fur. Some know me for having a ve...

Re: open pinfu (jumbo shrimp)

Again, just because a videogame has it in an option doesn't mean it's worth referencing. I appreciate that others can view the rules to standard ari-ari mahjong as being more complex than other games they usually play, up there with Twilight Imperium. I don't think it's wise to scatter bait by derai...

Re: open pinfu (jumbo shrimp)

Seven pairs: 25 fu. Kuipin / open pinfu / horizontal exposed hand / (some other unholy translation): 30 fu. Closed pinfu+tsumo: 20 fu. Everything else: 20 base fu plus... If we can accept that seven pairs with three value pairs is 25 fu, and not 31 or 40 fu, then we can put anything related to kuipi...

WRCR rules: The good, the bad, and the [bleep]

First of all, the link: http://ooyamaneko.net/download/mahjong/World_Riichi_Championship_Rules_2015.pdf I want to preface this with the intention that the thread is meant to comment and criticize the rules, and by extension, any relevant meta enforced by the community it comes from. I don't think it...

--> cost the game

Scoring second isn't losing, it depends on context. Being able to score haneman is probably your best option given the circumstances.

Re: pon, chi, or pass?

Calling chii is a mistake. You end up with 556s where onlt 1 of 4s, 6s, and 7s remain. The player across is also gunning for souzu, discards clearly indicating a flush hand and not tanyao. Given the time to absorb it all, I would probably recommend to just let it go, your hand 90% likely to be no-te...

Re: [Montreal (QC), Canada] 1st North American Riichi Open

We're up to 5 paid places, 11 solid registrations. Add the locals that will sign up in the coming weeks, and it's looking good. A sizeable American contingent is coming to Montreal: all that's missing is you :)
