Re: Interesting read, and pushing midgame
Be careful though, discarding aka dora can also be a trick to get a winning tile when you need a quick win and don't care about the points! Say you're top in S4 and you have this kind of pattern, you're significantly improving your chances to win (works pretty good with suji traps, too).

Re: Differences between real life and online mahjong?
Most of your questions have been answered, so here's just a quick word. About tiles placement, it requires a certain level of comfort with the game, but you can definitely get some info. If you're careful (and your opponents are not) you can sometimes know their wait so that's pretty big. Unless you...

Re: Discard while defending
My answer of discarding the 8s is intended to earn some time, and see the 3 next discards. It's hard to decide anything until then. Say someone throws away a 7s and it goes through I'd take that opportunity to be safe for 3 turns (unless I pick up some safe tile). But if all is equally dangerous, mi...

Re: Discard while defending
As you state you don't have anything 100 % safe, and I wouldn't bet on 6-man ou 6-sou to be safe just because the 9 were discarded, that's too weak of an info. If those were naka-suji (if the 3s get discarded later), why not. For now, I'd try my luck on a 8 bambou, since I can see 3 of the 7-sou. It...

Re: Mahjong video
Haha I'm not sure we're quite ready for this kind of big production, but that would definitely bring some newcomers!Barticle wrote:Très bien. There's nothing more I can suggest, except perhaps a storyline involving yakuza or special abilities for each character.

Re: Mahjong video
A new video from our club! I think the result is pretty good technically, we were a bit short on light but we didn't encounter technical issues this time. Hope you like it

Re: Fast Mahjong
I checked it out and there are some pretty funny rules! A few that come to mind now: -can't discard a dora except for riichi. There is allowance for one dora if you're doing kokushi (which gives away your plan of course) -can't declare riichi on a suji trap -atozuke is allowed only if your outs with...

Re: Fast Mahjong
The guy grope the video is Shōichi Sakurai (桜井章一). If you research his name on YouTube you'll find mahjong dramas, videos about cheating, etc. As for this style of mahjong it looks fun! I wouldn't like to play only like that but once in a while I enjoy a fast-paced game (something that's kinda hard ...

Re: Mahjong Marseille 2016 (MERS1 in Marseille, France)
We hope so too :p So far not so bad, one week after the announcement and 5 months before the event we have 8 players. We are hoping for a minimum of 20 (and then hoping the first hope is not an unreasonable one !) If you're interested the Spanish fast train goes to Marseille, last year we went to Ba...

Mahjong Marseille 2016 (MERS1 in Marseille, France)
Since this is an international community, I'm not sure somebody's gonna be willing to travel to the south of France, but if you are we are organizing a tournament in Marseille on April 16th, followed by a day of free play and meeting outside. All infos are here: http://www.chuuren.fr/mers-2016-en Ho...

Re: Do you riichi?
Just because it's neither safe nor suji, or there are other reasons it looks dangerous? The fact that the player's last "conscious" discard is a 4m may indicate that they thought they had a use for it until the last moment, which may indicate a 344 or 445 pattern. They'd hold on to it because it wo...

Re: Do you riichi?
6m looks dangerous, I'd only discard it if everything else looked as dangerous. I don't want to deal in a dealer riichi ippatsu and I don't need the points. 1s is safe against the dealer, and even though it's the dora there are already 3 outs which makes it less likely to be somebody else's winning ...

Re: Mahjong video
It might be unnecessary if you can find the perfect camera angle, but you could consider physical aids for hand and discard placement. Perhaps green stickers, strips cut from green post-it notes, clear adhesive tape, a cardboard square placed in the centre or even faint pencil lines on the mat? :o ...
