Re:Ura Dora Strategy
Assuming that more doras purely adds more variance (which i\'m not sure is actually the case, as discussed in the other post i started on red fives strategy) then it does not make sense that pros would want to play that way in order to make more money. Logic dictates that their greater earnings wou...

Re:game recording for analysis. Good or bad idea?
There\'s a great live replay where Takeo Kojima detects and clearly avoids a fully concealed dama-ten shanpon wait (no reach). Not sure how he does it. Because the other 999 times, he loses the hand? :P I\'m real skeptical about this stuff. The most famous defensive player in Japan is a pro named I...

Re:Some WWYD from Toupaiou! (Part 1)
These are interesting examples, thanks for posting them. It\'s difficult to see what everyone\'s score is and what round it is. If there\'s no way to make this clearer in the screenshot, posting them under it would be helpful. I\'d discard 4-bam, 6-bam. I realize my choice loses in the first example...

Re:game recording for analysis. Good or bad idea?
Ah. Well it seems I misread your comments. I guess that tends to happen when posts get a bit emotional. I do wish you guys would turn it down on the ad-hominem stuff. You both are posting because you really like the game. If you feel that the other person ignored a point you made, then that means th...

Re:game recording for analysis. Good or bad idea?
Also do agree with you there Benjamin but also hope you will go watch the video on those parts I commented on, it would be appreciated to clear things up. Thanks for a details and levelheaded response :) I guess if I\'m pulling a deus ex-machina here (am I really, Hotel?) I should comment on the de...

* I\'m not trying to imply that doing well on a free internet site is much in the grand scheme of things. I certainly don\'t think I am god and it seems that most would agree you\'re the one coming off more that way at the moment! You have to forgive us for that. The comments Hirohurl and I wrote w...
Re:WWYD 5/16
I\'m not sure why people are afraid of discarding into north\'s hand. It\'s probably not worth more than 1000 points and you still have your turn as dealer left. Why am I so confident it\'s cheap? He almost certainly doesn\'t have any dora since 3 of them are visible and he\'s probably going for tan...
Re:WWYD 5/16
3-dot in a second.
It locks dora as your pair and gives you 5 tiles to get from isshanten to tenpai.
If you really wanted to fold the hand, you could, but why bother? Since dora is 1, the guy across from you couldn\'t have anything expensive.

Re:game recording for analysis. Good or bad idea?
I agree with hirohurl. I think that the video HotelFSR was well made and I think its great that people are discussing it. But if you don\'t actually say why, you don\'t have much to stand on. Being high ranked on a free internet mahjong server doesn\'t count for much, especially since tenhou and tou...

Re:Bluffing Column on Front Page
Hikkake-riichi is waiting on a suji on one of the tiles in your discards. It\'s called moro-hikake when the suji is of the tile you used to declare riichi. Some people really do think that moro-hikkake is a mean thing to do. Personally I disagree, but many people don\'t. Another thing: If even silen...

Re:Red fives - 3 or 4 or 0?
Adding on to my previous comment: One of the big reasons ura-dora and ippatsu are worse than red fives is because you should ideally be able to know pretty much what your hand is worth before you attempt to win with it. I agree with your logic, but not the context you\'re putting it in. What if you...

Re:Bluffing Column on Front Page
What about the case where you draw a tile that is already in your hand, and rather than tsumokiri, you discard the older tile? This seems to toe the line of "quiet bluffs"; on the one hand, it is an action designed solely to mislead your opponent, but it doesn\'t seem quite as openly disingenuous a...
