Re: Caught Up!
It's Garthe, with an 'e'. Now you have to read all the columns! I know I have done both! -- Don't you love it when Garthe is playing with something (pen, paper, chair, whatever) and Jenn tells him to "stop doing that!"? Many fun personal facts are released, too. Garth(e) as you call him i...

Re: Determining Waits especially in Chinitsu hands
All mahjong hands may have any amount of sequences or triples, but they will necessarily have a pair. An easy way to assess your waits is mentally separating your candidates for pairs, and looking at the remaining shape. Another, better one, long term skill, is memorizing many simpler shapes of whic...

Re: Red Threes or Red Sevens
I played at San Group parlors, and they use two red 3p. No red 3s or 3m, obviously. They have other whacky rules for being such a successful commercial jansou. For example, an ankan on 3p will get you 3000 points and 3 chips from everyone instantly. They really take the "3" thing seriously. Come to ...

Re: Work in Progress - Mahjong Table
Also, wouldn't it have been a better idea to add the cloth before nailing the edges? This particular Mahjong table is made of hardwoods. Stained an English Chestnut color and sealed with three clear coats of protective finish. It will be replacing our chess table in the library. There will be no cl...

Ah, also, abut placing snacks in the center, I must say I have already tried that and they happen to obstruct the view of others' discards. orz

Re: Work in Progress - Mahjong Table
As they "should"? When playing tezumi ("by hand" as opposed to "in an autodealer") the expected procedure (even in some pro organizations like Kyoukai) is that the dice should be right next to the current hand's dealer. I didn't know that! Anyway, on my table, they will go in the center. Along with...

Re: Work in Progress - Mahjong Table
One quick question: Where would you put the point sticks? The first incarnation of this won't have little drawers underneath - so the point sticks will go beside the table (there is enough room when this is placed on a standard card table - so everybody's sticks will be in front of them pushed up a...

Re: Yakuman Club
A quick question. If the dealer makes double riichi at his first discard and the south player deals immediately his wining tile.Is it a Renho Yakuman or not ??? Nope. That's Double Riichi + Ippatsu. (And ouch) Renho applies to non-dealers, where that first discard is the win. For Tenhou, Chihou, Re...
