Re: Work in Progress - Mahjong Table

PS Try my link again - quickly! It's working. :o Got it! Very cool board indeed. I'm not a fan of the monotone tiles and I need to sit on a chair at my age but it is cool. Better woodworking than my skills for sure. At first I thought he made some nice wooden holders for the point sticks but on sec...

Re: Work in Progress - Mahjong Table

As they "should"? When playing tezumi ("by hand" as opposed to "in an autodealer") the expected procedure (even in some pro organizations like Kyoukai) is that the dice should be right next to the current hand's dealer. I didn't know that! Anyway, on my table, they will go in the center. Along with...

Re: Work in Progress - Mahjong Table

This is looking good so far. Have you considered adding a fabric playing surface to prevent damage to the tiles/table? In case you've not seen it, you can compare notes with this project: http://www.reachmahjong.com/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=52551 Sadly, the images in that thread don't show for ...

Re: Newbie introduction

I'm still the newbie around here so I'll give it a go! I'm currently 43 - living between Boston and Providence, MA here in the northeast USA. I love all things Japanese - I study the use and practice of the Soroban in my spare time and enjoy a large number of Japanese imported video games. I first d...

Re: Work in Progress - Mahjong Table

One quick question: Where would you put the point sticks? The first incarnation of this won't have little drawers underneath - so the point sticks will go beside the table (there is enough room when this is placed on a standard card table - so everybody's sticks will be in front of them pushed up a...

Work in Progress - Mahjong Table

So I want a table - but was pretty stunned by the prices. So with my one power-tool (a drill), a saw, a screwdriver and some odd screws plus some scrap wood I have started on a custom table. It's sized for my Riichi set and will fit nicely over a standard folding card table. Not sure what colors I'l...

Yes, yes... of course I knew that was Jenn. I'm up to Jongcast #45 (listening to 2 a day on my commute to catch-up). I forgot to add my smiley with a hasty post!

Re: Let's see your Mahjong Collections!

Great collection, Bart! I'm going into Boston soon to check out the amazing selection of used bookstores there where I'm sure I can bolster my collection.

By the by, who is the gorgeous girl on the cover of your Reach Mahjong book?

Let's see your Mahjong Collections!

Let's check out your Mahjong collections! We'll limit this to just sets and books - I don't have enough space to layout my Mahjong video game collection :) (I'm sure that's true for many of you with books - do your best). I'm sure mine is pretty minimal - but we must start somewhere. https://dl.drop...

I love things that build up community! Good work, Bart (I never know whether to call you Bart, James or Barticle - I'm sticking with Bart until asked otherwise).

My choice will be obvious. Since there is no White-Donkey, I'm going with:

Re: Mahjong at BBG CON 2012

Close to 800 I believe. They sell out every year now. 800? That's tiny. I'm used to anime conventions, numbering in the thousands. Even so, I see potential in board gaming conventions growing just as large. Apparently the wiki I read this morning is a few years outdated. I just talked to Aldie (the...

Re: Mahjong at BBG CON 2012

BGG.con sells out fast every year. About 750 seats taken in 5 days.

Several friends of mine are going.

Kyuu - I sent your geek account a little Mahjong surprise :)

Re: Increasing Exposure to Reach Mahjong

BGG is a great choice since the rules and terminology of Japanese mahjong have ample potential for "getting your geek on" and should appeal to users there. It's a bit of an uphill climb so far. Although Mahjong in particular has 107 'fans' on BGG and over 3100 ratings... the Japanese game is hardly...

Looks cool. I poked around to sign up but it seems it wants some flavor of Internet Explorer? We're Linux based here so only Firefox and Chrome are available for me.
