Re:The Take Set -
Isn\'t a set made by a Japanese plastics company - Taiyo Chemicals Inc, I think it is. Does anyone have one of these sets and can comment on the quality? (remember - we nitpick! ;) Gg Hi Gg, The Japanese SANGO set is made by Taiyo Chemicals, or at least it was the last time I checked. As to WHERE i...

Re:Expert Strategies
Tips for beginners? 1. Learn to be observant - get an awareness of what\'s happening around you... not just your own hand development. I know in Chinese games tiles are thrown out into a common pool, but at least try to take note of the tiles that people are discarding. 2. Learn to play defensively ...

Kuitan is accepted in the various mj circles I play in in Hiroshima (except for my regular 3pmj sessions).

Since my wife and I are seniors, bolder designs are favorable as they are easier on the eyes. After at least 60 hands, it has become very easy to construct the walls and I have no buyer\'s remorse whatsoever.

Good to know. The Take tiles are very good and easy to read.

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
Gg, that is a very fair review of the Take set so I gave you some \"karma\"! * The 3 x dice in the Take set are actually bigger (and lower quality) than standard Japanese mj dice, which are indeed very small. * I agree with the comment that the Sango set, although cheaper, is actually a better quali...

Hi Mcqreaq,
That is an interesting mixture. Have you thought about adding shogi to the mix?

Re:Exporters for Japanese books...?
Hi Bart, I used to feature a small range of Japanese mahjong rule books on my site, just ones I picked up in used book shops. It was a bit too fiddly to keep it up on a tight schedule, but I still have several books so I might start posting them again. The books would cost around $5-$10 (usually the...

Re:How much do you actually play?
Good question! In a typical week, I play one 2 hour afternoon game with two Japanese ladies. The game is hosted by one of the ladies. and my regular \"three player mj\" session on Friday evenings which can be anything from 4 to 10 hours long (usually 4-6 hours though), in a mahjong parlour. Then, on...

Time to reveal all, so to speak, though I blush to do so.
1. Uso - as Suihi said.
2. Skaato mekuri (skirt lifting)
3. Inu no chinko (mentula canis)

Hi Benjamin, Several points to cover... Yes, my earlier post was confusing. I should have clarified what I was talking about! I plead late night posting! (It\'s now 2:21am... again but I\'ll try to think clearly for this post...) You are right, there are numerous \"Mahjong Nyumon\" books out there -...

Usually you declare Riichi and put your Riichi-tenbou down, but if someone goes out on your discard you can retrieve your tenbou.
Conventions vary, however!

Hi Tom,
You are too polite, apologizing for somebody else\'s clumsiness!
Hi Suihi,
Correct! Uso = 5-bam & \"a lie\" as in \"I don\'t believe it.\"
Cheesoh = bathroom - I think I\'ll always remember that now! But no, #3 is not based on word play.

Crazy Mahjong Lingo...
I was just describing our Hiroshima \"den-den\" (bam bam) scoring method and was thinking about how mahjong can generate some crazy phrases and terminology. Here are some of the things we find ourselves saying: \"Three is one, four is two, five is four.\" (1 fan + den den = 3; 3 = 1,000 points, abbr...

Re:Guildford UK Mahjong Tournament Report
I don\'t know the exact system they used at Guildford, but for us in Hiroshima the scoring system goes:
3 = 1
4 = 2
5 = 4
6-7 = Mangan
8-9 = Haneman
10-12 = Double Mangan
13-15 = Triple Mangan
etc...

4 = 2
5 = 4
