Re:Open Tanyao

... To be exact, Riichi and Tsumo are the two forms of \"Agari Yaku\" that are listed (in Mahjong Nyumon) as \"Tehai Taisei\" (\"hand systems\" i.e. ways to get hands, I guess). They form a kind of subsection in the chapter on Yaku before the \"actual Yaku\" listings. The chapter goes: === HAND FINI...

Re:Open Tanyao

I decided to add \"on someone else\'s discard\" so as to avoid the inevitable discussion as to whether Riichi and Tsumo are really Yaku or not! If your hand does not contain a Yaku you can\'t go out on someone else\'s discard unless you declare Riichi. However, you can go out if your hand is Tenpai ...

Re:Open Tanyao

Some people here say they dont like closed tanyao. I favor open tanyao too, BUT i can change my kind of play to the prevalant rules and dont think it should be any problem for anybody who understands how to play the game. IMHO, i think its necessary to be able to change your playingstlye cuz of the...

Hi Aetherton,

Thanks for purchasing the 1.5 set!

I found out yesterday that there IS a 1.0 set... No sign of the extra tiles though.

Re:Open Tanyao

I remember seeing a mahjong set in W.H. Smiths years ago. Actually, when I was a boy I used to be fascinated by the photo of a mahjong set that was a regular feature of the \"presents for gentlemen\" (or whatever) section of those bulky mail order catalogues. I had absolutely no clue what you would ...

Re:Open Tanyao

This is an interesting discussion. In the 4-player games I play in Hiroshima kuitan is usually allowed, but I haven\'t noticed it occurring too often. However, I have noticed that beginners love to open up their hand on every opportunity. My weakness was for open toi-toi. But open hands also leave a...

Re:

Thanks for the info. I haven\'t yet seen a 2.0 set. So it has blue tile backs and no special 5 tiles... and going for around $140 at the moment.

BTW, the sale was confirmed on the 1.5 set. I\'ve got my eye out for some more.

Re:Mahjong Manners

Yes, on the question of \"poker face\", if you pull a tile from the wall which is the same as one in your hand that you want to discard, then usually you discard the one in your hand and not the one you pulled from the wall. I say usually, not always. ;-)

Re:Question about the Nintendo Yakuman New Ivory set

The reason actually seems to be that Nintendo stopped producing this set. It used to have 4 x Red Fives, then suddenly sets appeared with 2 Red Coins and SIX White Dragons. Now, you can\'t get the tiles from Nintendo any more. However, a set called \"Shinzoge Janbo\" (New Ivory Jumbo) appeared on th...

Wait a minute... I have already posted a photo of the tiles on this blog: http://japanese-games-shop.blogspot.com/2009/08/more-japanese-mahjong-sets-on.html If you click on the picture of the Saki tiles you should get a BIG version of the photo to look at. To answer your questions about the sets, th...
