Depends on who you ask. 4 years ago Kinma magazines were published 4 times a month. Now that\'s down to 2.experimilk wrote:k.....kinma isn\'t in danger of that is it ;_;

Re:When do you put down 1000-points when you Reach?
AFAIK, the best way to handle this is for the *next person* not to draw (or call) until the riichi stick is on the table. This prevents all problems.

Re:Open Tanyao
Well, I did learn the rules the way the Japanese did and I think hirohurl and other did too. :P At least in common conversation amongst Mahjong pros, \"yaku\" means basically what everyone here thinks it means--a pattern in your hand that scores han/fan and meets the 1-han minimum. SO is correct in ...

Oh, also \"Ato-zuke\" isn\'t quite what poochy describes.

Re:Yakuman DS Menu Translation Help
Thanks to poochy for getting this. Filling in what you missed: 3rd picture: ???--> Pao (off). \"Responsibility\" rule that says if someone claims (not wins) a tile off of you that ensures they get a yakuman, you have to pay half of a discard win or all of a self-draw win. 4th picture: ???-->kuigae. ...

Re:Open Tanyao
Ah come on, this is fun :woohoo: If you think so  I just hope the thread isn\'t going to take a bad turn... Maybe I should start up an uma thread. But I suppose I\'m kind of lazy. silent observer wrote: EMA\'s lost one player because of concealed tanyao. Well, you\'re certainly entitled to you...

Re:Open Tanyao
I think we\'re starting to get overly technical here :) To attempt to wrap it up, I\'d say that most (but definitely not all) experienced players think that open tanyao adds to the game. I think we all also agree that it gives beginners, which EMA is full of, an easy way to throw off the game. Wheth...

Re:Akagi
Don\'t forget financial reasons. Right now, Kinda Mahjong, the magazine that Akagi is serialized in, is struggling. Akagi is its biggest hit, if it ends the magazine is in trouble. This is why Akagi and Washizu have been playing the same damn game for practically two years. I asked Fukumoto (the aut...

Re:Rules for start
He is obsessed with Mahjong being a game of patterns (and by extension a game of all out offense and little defensive skill), where the \'aesthetics\' end up being more important than the gameplay. This is not how he would put it but I think it amounts to a fair description. I think you\'re dead on...

Re:Dragon symbols on mahjong dice?
Ari Ari refers to kuitan and atozuke and is a subset of Modern Japanese rules. Neither of the \"Ari\" refer to red fives, but these can be considered to be a subset of Ari Ari.

Re:Uma allocation when points are tied?
As Hotel said, whoever was East first in a game gets priority on ties, then South, then West. In a way this makes sense, since being the last to be East is a slight advantage (and a big one if you\'re allowed to quit on a win).

Re:History of Mahjong: Cheating
In the Chinese variant (common with Chinese players in casinos) I was taught, discards are played tiles face down (a much more interesting challenge when there is no sacred discard rule .... try it). When you discard you quickly show the tile to each player individually for a second or so before sw...

Re:Ura Dora Strategy
@iandstanley I\'m not quite sure how to put this, but the Japanese Mahjong I\'m familiar with doesn\'t work the way in which you describe it. For the most part, what makes pros better isn\'t reading discards. Adding red fives and ura dora decreases, not increases, the need for defense. This is becau...
