Re: Rinshan + Haitei

When people write rulesets they should list Haitei Raoyue as "self-draw win with the last tile from the live wall" and Rinshan Kaihou as "Self-draw win with the quad replacement tile from the dead wall." (or Rinshanhai, or whatever other whacky English terms they wish to use, but with the same idea...

Re: Renchan (Continuances) and honba

You add honba in all cases barring the following two: 1. Chombo hands. 2. When the dealer gets bounced by a non-oya winning hand. Draw hands add honba, irrespective of dealer tenpai status. So in a standard East wing with tenpai-renchan, if original West deals third, gets two repeats by winning then...

Re: WWYD 2012/05/30

edit: confused Wavemaster's example final result with a hand as it would properly develop. Can you space out a 14th tile or something when you do that ? Still find it ludicrous. You're still planning on filling three closed waits to finish your hand. A shanpon wait with a dora pair makes more sense ...

Re: WWYD 2012/05/30

I've tried to look at this hand with an openness to all solutions... and I disagree with most of them. Masayoshi Ara's tool places high scores on 3p, then 7p and 4m, but with three other results with outcomes that aren't bad at all. (They all give 6.5 to 8.0 % chance of winning the hand) So I'm goin...

Re: Official Rulebook in English

It exist at least one project to make an un-official English translation of the JPML rules, but it looks like abandoned since September 2007: http://www.assembla.com/spaces/JPML/wiki/Table_of_content And the JPML offcial rule (in Japanese): http://www.ma-jan.or.jp/guide/game_rule.php Argh! That's w...

Re: Anime Central Tournament (2012)

* Cannot pon, if first opened with a chi Where did this come from, I can tell that everything else (aside from ryanhan-shibari after 2 repeats) can be set as an option in your favorite H-jan game. Is this some kind of attempt of enforcing sakizuke play without realistically understanding the concep...

Re: Pao Rules/Insurance Penalties...

I wonder how fair is it to extend Pao to Suu Kan Tsu, considering it is virtually the rarest Yakuman to make. It's not a question of fair or very fair here. It follows the exact same logic as winning off a replacement tile obtained from an open kan. If you are dealing live tiles (sheng-pai: any til...

Re: Ippatsu on Ryanhan Shibari

It's a bonus point (there's a term this, don't shoot me if it's not kensho-yaku) but not "yaku" proper. Ippatsu and dora can never be counted, the latter is obvious. I can't give the thorough explanation for the former however.

Re: Riichi quick reference guide

I think Sylvain's post did most of the critical reading needed to demonstrate that this needs both more work, a rewrite, and research. However, a set is fine in English to describe a group of three identical tiles that are not yet melded (your other options are triplet, "three-of-a-kind", there aren...

Re: New from YMI

Since I don't want to create an internet legend that isn't true, I personally don't have that skill, I mean, I can assemble tiles if i went really slowly, but if i grab quickly, normally i can go to 12-13 tiles. But the YMI black tiles I have spin at nine, four pressured on the left, four on the rig...

Re: New from YMI

The slipperiness is the combination of two things: the polish/finish and the fact that they are not square cornered prisms but soft-rounded boxes, losing yet even more surface to stack tiles.

Re: New from YMI

I don't recommend single-tone black tiles (or any color) from YMI (or anyone). The tiles, once scraped come up much more obviously than on a lighter color. The reverse problem is cracks on light tiles, in case someone was wondering. I've bought a black set from them, but they're way too slippery to ...

Re: How to explain the yaku

Are you trying to pick a fight or something? You sound like you're acting out someone else's vendetta for them. There's a difference between not showering with endless compliments and discrediting something, for you to ignore the entire range of possible positions in between, that's a problem you ha...

Re: How to explain the yaku

Chinitsu is worth 9 when closed, 7 when open, because you always have honitsu implied. This is wrong. Honitsu = 1 suit + winds and dragons. Chinitsu = 1 suit, no winds and dragons. You can't have yes and no at the same time. Honrou implies chanta. This is also wrong for the exact same reason. Chanta...
