I meant as far as anyone who owned a legal digital copy that we could use. But yes, I like your ideas on the subject.RichardK8 wrote:There is no need to translate an entire book and infringe copyrights in the process.

Re: Scoring Sticks
I have poker chips a-plenty and could use them if I wanted to, but would rather not.
And the topic is different styles of scoring sticks, please.

Re: Scoring Sticks
If you have poker chips, you can just use a 4-3-3-5 distribution for 25k or 5-3-3-5 for 30k. (red-blue-black-white, as blue is the usual color of coloured riichi sticks.) I have plenty of poker chips, but I feel it kinda ruins it... Anyway, how would that work exactly with what you said? aren't the...

Re: Table Comments, Opinions, Praise
I'd probably go with the drawer in the end, I'm good enough with woodworking to do it, just need the time...
I was originally going to do the recessed grooves on the frame but I felt the material was too thin to do it well.

Re: Table Comments, Opinions, Praise
Nice table. If it's not to rude to ask, can you tell us how many money and time it cost you? $15 for the table, $20 for the wood I used, $10 for the materials on top(a vinyl mat and a felt top), $10-$15 for misc.(needed new washers on table, wood stain, spray adhesive, etc.). The rest of the tools ...

Re: Scoring Sticks
I was merely referring to fact that the post describes itself as the "General Laws of Mahjong" and "the most widely used rules in Japan". I just don't think that's necessarily true. As for easy rules, I found that the Mahjong wiki section on Japanese modern was quite good. Back on topic, I still won...

Re: Any Non-'Beginner' books out there?
As far as the translation goes, first off, wouldn't it be best to have the imported text first to work with?
If ANYONE wants a translated book, we'll need that first. PDF from somewhere online would probably be best, but just someone with a scanner, book, and a japanese OCR could do it too.

Re: Table Comments, Opinions, Praise
NVM, I thought you said that the black sets are just someone trying to make a japanese set but not in japan, so linked a real black set from japan. As I said, that's not my set. I actually kinda prefer the look of my set of the mustard color or whatever that they use. And I know mine isn't a real ja...

Re: Gut feeling and 'Nagare' versus Playing by the books
I play poker a bit with friends, and I've had plenty of times where I just go for a hand, bluff it out, and win big. Sometimes I even get lucky enough to flop the card that wins my hand. As for mahjong, I'm still no good at reading discards or anything, but if I want to go for a specific hand, I jus...

Re: Scoring Sticks
"One set contains 88 sticks: 4 x 10,000; 8 x 5,000; 36 x 1,000; 40 x 100." My set came with the 4-10k and 8-5k, but then I had 32-1k and 33-100 Normally there is enough to play anywhere between 25k-30k per player. Actually I think many in Japan play with 25,000 points. The missing 5,000 is an ante b...

Re: Table Comments, Opinions, Praise
I don't really like the color of the tabletop, this blackish thingy makes it look gloomy. (I prefer green and teal ones...) If you're talking about the felt, look at the additional pictures. It's green, my phone's camera just does a bad job of catching it right. Look at the four pictures that are j...

Scoring Sticks
Posted this on the old forum before I realized that it wasn't used anymore.... anyway. So, I just got into playing it irl, bought a decent set online, and it didn't come with enough scoring sticks for a full 30,000 per player in a 4 player game. Instead of bothering them to send me a dozen or so sti...

Table Comments, Opinions, Praise
Well, decided I needed my own table... So I want to a used items store and bought one! After a few trips to the hardware store, a trip to a fabric store, and using some nice fancy saws at work, I think I ended up with something nice. Table with materials laid out on top: http://i713.photobucket.com/...
