Re: Akagi
Few mahjong manga concern healthy mahjong, even though it's form of mahjong relevant to most of us. Healthy means no gambling, no drinking, no smoking, no cheating. The only translated ones I know of are Saki and Mahjong Club. There seem to be some running in Kindai Mahjong as well.

Re: need an explanation, please
I have these numbers from a document of unknown validity: Chances of dealing into riichi: Genbutsu (guaranteed opponent's furiten): 0% Wind or dragon tanki (when you see three of them): 0,9% Suji 1, 9 (when the opponent is in guaranteed furiten for 4 or 6 respectively): 2,9% Wind or dragon tiles (wh...

Re: quick decision vs WWYD
I don't think tanyao dora1 is enough here. It's better to focus on a closed hand and go for riichi with chiitoi or sanankou. 1s is overall the second best discard here, as 26m56s get you to tenpai and most let you go for tanyao sanankou. However, by discarding 4-bam , 26m236s get you to tenpai. That...

Re: quick decision vs WWYD
6s discard was correct. Discarding 1m gives the same amount of tiles to tenpai, but makes pinfu and iipeiko harder to get and the eventual tenpai wait worse. Discarding 2m reduces the amount of tiles to tenpai, and the increased chance of iipeiko wouldn't be worth it even if it didn't. Even at a qui...

Re: Goulash question
Hi, I'm a newbie on this forum. An Aussie who has been playing mah jong for a few years with gals on my street. We had a new position come up today about goulash. We had started swapping tiles across and left and right. One player had just made two swaps. She then found her tiles went mahjong - as ...

Re: another gameplay question
You once stated (WWYD 7/22) that "there are cases where you have to choose to be slower, but those are because they offer something in return. That something is usually more points or better defense". Is that what we are talking about here? No. This is a case of the longer path being faster than th...

Re: another gameplay question
If you have no way to win other than drawing the Yakuhai Dora, then making it so that you win the moment you draw it isn't a terrible plan. However, with this hand there's other ways to win. You should notice that the souzu form a 34567 three-way wait shape. The manzu 3456 can also easily form 2- or...

Re: Wanna some WWYD?
Yes, 3 han good wait is a riichi in the typical situation.
It is fine to pon the chun, as doing so both increases the minimum score and the path to tenpai. There's a possibility of calling to tenpai as well.

Re: Wanna some WWYD?
The plan is to get rid of the 6p pair completely and focus on the 14p and 58s ryanmens I can see how this would work. You discard a 6p, try to complete one of the ryanmen and discard the other 6p, and rely on the other ryanmen for the win. Question: Do you riichi, and if you don't, and happen to dr...

Re: Wanna some
1. 8-pin . The only total backfire is another 8p, and the 5m sort of backfires (5 tile wait tenpai instead of 9). Discarding 7m makes 58m total backfires, and discarding 4p makes 369p total backfires where 3p is the dora. 4m is plain worse than 7m, since it kills 45666-based shanpon waits. 6m makes ...

Re: curious cat
This is American mahjong, where "4 melds and a pair" does not exist. Every hand is irregular, listed on a card you have to buy again every year. By interpreting the hakus as 0, you can see the hand as 11 2007 2007 ESWN. It's one of those years hands, telling this picture is from 2007. The wall is pu...

Re: Optional Rules
I would even say that Oka is a gambling-related bonus while Uma is one designed for sensible placement bonuses. I don't think that Oka and the lopsided point spread it creates have any place in competitive mahjong. If you want Shanyu, you can still use it without Oka.

Re: another gameplay question
Absolutely stay closed here. Pon of 4m turns the hand from an okay shape iishanten to a bad shape sanshanten, and doesn't increase the value much.
I don't think there's any case where you'd pon 4m with this. Even if you need haneman, riitsumo tanpin iipeikou dora should be a better way.

This is very impressive. I really appreciate you taking the time to register on the forum and post a reply. I read it a few times and can understand what you are saying, and it makes sense. It reminds me of a wwyd from a few months ago where Ozball used what he called method 2 to analyze another pr...
