Re: Renho and Paarenchan!

I keep saying that Renho should be on and be at least mangan, because it should never be inferior to Double Riichi Ippatsu. Yaku shouldn't be needed for the same reason. It's still rarer than many Yakuman, so even Yakuman is completely sensible. Paarenchan just doesn't make sense because huge piles...

Re: Totsugeki's Problems No. 2

4-pin is both safe and the most efficient discard, so it's kind of a no-brainer for this turn. Those discards don't really say chanta or honitsu, but 789 sanshoku with the dora for 4000 is possible. The 889 shape discard will be the most risky one. However, we have 3 7-man so west's probably screwed...

Re: WWYD 2011/11/02

Riichi tsumo pinfu iipeiko aka1 + either 2pin or uradora. Haneman tsumo, just as planned.

The last tile should be as defensive as possible. 6man seems a little bit more dangerous than the 6-pin, so it has to go now. I'd have kept the west wind instead of the 4-pin last turn.

Re: WWYD 2011/10/26

9-bam Winning anything here as dealer would improve my situation massively. Just riichi-tsumo-dora1 cuts the deficit from 13000 to 5000. I'm racing against the leader's open hand, and the speed difference between the 258s three-way and the 8s kanchan is huge. The 9s serves no purpose when it comes t...

Re: WWYD 2011/09/28

This reminds me of a quote from Osamuko's blog... The threat here is Player D getting a tsumo, which will knock you out of first place, going into the last hand. Seeing as the player in second by 100 points knows this, he has virtually no reason to gamble on making a hand, since it pretty much accom...

Re: WWYD 2011/9/14

The 4b doesn't only go for the 4677 shape. It also fits in the 2344 shape. If we draw 1b, 4b or 8b the hand becomes an excellent iishanten shape for a pinfu hand that uses two 4bs as the pair.

Re: WWYD 2011/9/14

Discarding the 4s is also better for getting tanyao. And it technically has the widest path to tenpai because of the discarded 8m. All factors are in its favor.

However, discarding the 4b and then drawing the 9m is where it gets interesting. I would drop the 8m.

Re: WWYD 2011/09/07

I'd still call any tile for tenpai. Lately people don't give too much attention to agari% and all they think about is "I want at least mangan, so I have to use every han point I can." I guess that is more fun, but not always brings a direct profit with it. I'd still respect that way of thinking, I ...

Re: WWYD 2011/09/07

2-dot No reason to break up the iipeeko shape. No need for a 455 shape either, it increases our path to tenpai by just 4 tiles that don't get pinfu. The normal course here is to discard the red 5 man on tenpai for riichi/iipeiko, tanpin dora 1. But by keeping the 5-man, if we draw 4 or 6 man, we can...

I... I did it... Comeback from last place 20k points behind everyone else with two cheap hands (saki style) and a Daisangen. http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2011090705gm-0089-0000-x966733f89721&tw=0 http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l321/MutoidLog/THE_MOMENT_OF_SUPREME_BLISS.jpg That was my first daisange...

Re: Illustrated guide of waits with names

I like to think of many waits as variations of the ankou-tan shapes. The classic 5-way in the above post I call extended ryantan. Tatsumaki is two-sided ryantan. Happoujibin is extended two-sided ryantan. There's also the two-sided extended ryantan 2-dot 2-dot 2-dot 3-dot 4-dot 4-dot 4-dot 5-dot 6-d...

Re: What Would You Discard (08/17/2011)

4-bam , definitely. 4 tiles make another ryanmen out of the 2-crak 3-crak 3-crak 4-crak , and that both scores more and is a better wait than the two ryanmens in the dots that overlap on the 4-dot.

Re: Today's WWYD

I'd get rid of the 68m kanchan. Waits on 3 tiles and the improvement 5m also completes the 34m ryanmen. The two ryanmen and the dora-either-way ryankan are definite keeps. The hand lacks a solid pair, and the 12234p shape is ideal for getting one. 1245p turn the pins into pair+shuntsu+ryanmen, with ...
