So Gemma, how'd you do?
I wasn't able to watch your 11 PM special match with a pro, but I'm curious how it went down?

Re: WWYD 2013-08-05
I'd drop the 4-crak and if nothing happens to change my mind, the 6-crak following that, keeping the flexibility of multiple complex waits in bamboo. I'd also be very happy to see the possibility of a tanyao pinfu riichi double chow dora with an aka dora set develop and grow at least a haneman out o...

Re: WWYD 2013-07-29
I agree with Kyuu, except I'd discard the 3-dot first. It's splitting hairs, but my rational is this: I've already decided to discard them both, and the 2-dot has already been discarded and went thru, so it is relatively safer than is the fresh 3-dot. It's my preference to shed the more dangerous ti...

Finally... my homemade table is "done".
Well... it's mostly "done"... it also has a hole under the blue playing mat to play Washizu mahjong, but the bag to hold the tiles is still being sewn by my wife... so it's mostly done. Set it up in the house just tonight. It's not the first time we've played on it though.. since we've played on it ...

Re: Japanese Classical
I agree with Shirluban... teach just one rule set; the one you want them to play. If you're looking for simple... the simplest rule set of them all is Filipino which has no special hands (so any complete hand of five sets and a pair wins), and no scoring to calculate, the winner simply wins the pot ...

Hi Wavemotion,
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was a labor of love over many years, so it's nice to see people enjoying it. And thanks for the shout out!

Re: Mahjong at the Falls
Wow! I have a brother who lives in Niagara Falls. I totally could have gone.
I'll need to keep my ear out for that in the future!
Thanks for the post, and helping to spread the fun of mahjong!

Re: WWYD 2013-04-08
I agree with Kyuu that (unless you fold this hand) that hatsu has to be taken care of... but its a fresh tile... as is the 2dot. Here's my read on this table, This hand is already past half done, and getting it into tenpai with self-draws is going to be tight, and even if I get it into tenpai, it's ...

Re: WWYD 2013-03-25
My thoughts are similar to Shirluban, but I'm thinking the hand is pretty versatile in terms of how many different tiles could bring this to ready. I'd probably stick with discarding the 8-bam, and keep my hand closed. It does seem tempting to go for tanyao, so maybe if the next few draws don't go m...

I've just read the Osaka rules, and wonder if it is not another name for Kansai riichi.

Re: WWYD 2013/1/7
Well... I'll probably get my rear handed to me on a plate, but I'll never get better if I don't stick it out there... so I'll go first and see what it teaches me. Looking at that hand, I'd toss the 2-dot. It doesn't develop the hand substantially to keep the five over the two per se, but the two was...

Re: Newbie introduction
Hi everyone. I'm a certafiable mahjong junkie, and contagious too. I've gotten lots of my friends and family into it. My son and I are currently building a mahjong table table together as a father/son project. Outside of mahjong I used to surf and sail before I moved to landlocked Texas :? I also li...
