Re: Official Rulebook in English

given that there has been reference to it, is 22 pages in a book (10%) a reference or an overview? Hi Senechal. That's a fair question to ask. Since you're referring to my book (the riichi chapter is 22 pages, which is 10% of the 218 page book) I can do my best to help answer that question. To begi...

Re: seat wind indicator

Now all I have to do is find a good way to paint 3 red fives without ruining the tiles. Two good solutions: One is to take a red crayola wax crayon, and rub it on the surface of the tile to pack the wax into the grooves of the engraving, then buff the face of the tile with a dry cloth to clean the ...

Re: Can you win during goulash?

According to "Mah-Jong 3rd Edition" which is the rulebook endorsed by the British Mah-Jong Association, there is no EXPLICIT mention that East is allowed to mahjong during the goulash. That said, the rules pertaining to the goulash do have this last sentence awkwardly tacked on to the end of the gou...

Re: Game-ending Draw

JPML leaves any unclaimed riichi sticks on the table at the end of the last hand. No one gets them. EMA gives them to the match-winner.

Did they announce the ruleset they were playing?

Re: I just couldn't resist!

If those tiles are actually ivory, that would make them very valuable (thousands?). Not sure how they could be 75% ivory, they look to be one-piece tiles... perhaps the group-effort translation is slightly off. Look carefully at your tiles for any kind of "grain". If you see any... get a little bit ...

DragonKong.com and MahjongTime are both English language online riichi mahjong sites, and if you're chatty like me, you can also chat with the other players at the table.

Re: Rule question: declared richi and red fives

I'll try to answer this question, although up front I'll admit I have no resource I can quote as authority on this issue. The promise with riichi is that any tile drawn, if not a winning tile, will be discarded… with the one exception being to allow the player to make a kong under certain restrictio...

Re: A question on waits?

Both of you have mentioned "ponning your head". Not sure I know what that means. Can you explain? I know it doesnt mean banging my head against the wall, which I felt like doing. Don't get discouraged. The more you hear it, the more the lingo makes sense. You're asking the right questions, which me...

Re: Damaten

THAT is the art of mahjong! Guessing when your opponents are ready... and thus knowing when to fold to avoid discarding into a loss. Anyone can make a winning hand, but the more profound skill is in avoiding the losses. Being good at avoiding catastrophic losses is what sets the better players apart...

Re: Scoring question

My understanding is the JPML A rules require the green-dra.
連盟Aルールでは發なし緑一色は認められません。
...and JPML B rules allow yakuman without green-dra.
緑一色は發がなくとも良い
As always, if I'm misinterpreting, please correct me.

Re: cheating

Most of the information online about cheating is antiquated. I actually did quite a bit of research on this topic for a chapter in my book, but then chose not to publish it. I worried it would come across as a how-to as opposed to a how-to-spot. I allude to it here . For starters you said "Ofc not o...

RE: A Terrible Thing

When I score, I’m always careful to say out loud the score as I’m writing it down and also say from who to who. I will then, while people are washing the tiles, hold up the score sheet for everyone to see even if they haven’t asked for it. People usually glance or take it from me to check. I do thi...

Re: WWYD 2013-09-09

3-dot The hand is one element heavy, so as it develops, more will have to be shed. I wouldn't mess with 78999, thats great for a set and a pair or two sets, so the choice is craks or dots, both of which aren't entirely safe at this point already, and in this case I'd favor keeping the craks. The big...

8-dot

It's dora, but its isolated. So is the 4man isolated, but its a tad safer than is the dora, so I'll drop the more dangerous of the two first. The longer you hold it, the more dangerous it becomes.

Re: Pon and position of stolen tile

>why do you position the exposed tiles in a way where players can tell whom the tile was stolen from? Does it affect scoring in any way? Yes, it directly affects riichi scoring. Players are forbidden from declaring ron if ANY of their discards could also complete their hand (furiten rule). If a play...
