Is this the place for intros? If not please move my thread
I\'m a youthful twenty-something player of flash mahjong games who has been slowly becoming curious about the real game they are based on. I\'ve sort of been lurking but just finally made an account.
Hope to learn alot here.
Am I obsessed with mahjong? 4 apps on my iPod Touch, three on my PC, several on DS amd two on my PSP...Hmmmm, I wonder.... :)

And you\'ll find the real game itself (as a Flash game, with computer opponents) at:

I went ahead and joined the Mahjong time site and played a game with the robots tutors there. Normally multiplayer games turn me off, but now I\'m frustrated because I want to learn how to play! I\'m intrigued darn it! :P

By the way, I didn\'t know there were so many various ways to play this game. When I joined the forum I thought \'reach\' was meant in the \'you have to reach out in order to be a good player\'. You live you learn, but I wonder, now that I\'ve been learning reach online, if this is the wrong version for me, with so many kinds.
What happens if I learn reach, then find out the only players in my city are playing another version? If I can find any players, the only casual playing club I\'ve found for Canada is in another province. :(

Think I prefer Mahjong time\'s version better. I couldn\'t figure out that flash one.

Mahjong Montreal play Reach mahjong.
If you find players who use another version, you\'ll have to adapt to their version. Since every mahjong rules (except USA) use the same base rule, it will not be very difficult.

When you gain experience you will see how slow and not so good to play (like pressing pass all the time) mahjongtime is... I sugest gamedesign, as its better (faster, clear interface, better bots)

I second that.
Big time.
I think that flash game is the best introduction to the game in English.

But there\'s no instructions, nothing explaining to me what is happening, everything is done automatically. I get more instruction from reading wikipedia\'s mahjong entry than from that flash game.
For people who know how to play already it must be fine, but I had no idea what I was doing until after reading a bunch of pages, and doing one of the mahjongtime tutorial games. :|
I guess to each his own.

Believe it or not, tvtropes has a decent intoduction page:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Mahjong.
It gives a good overview, without being too technical. (At least, I think so.
Also, the european mahjong association has a decent rulesbook pdf.

Heh, I actually started and wrote most of that article - see the page history if you don\'t believe me. I\'m glad to see you think it\'s good! And please do contribute anything you can think of that I (and my fellow tropers) may have missed.
