Let's see your Mahjong Collections!

Post by wavemotion » Sat Sep 01, 2012 12:49 pm

Let's check out your Mahjong collections! We'll limit this to just sets and books - I don't have enough space to layout my Mahjong video game collection :) (I'm sure that's true for many of you with books - do your best).

I'm sure mine is pretty minimal - but we must start somewhere.
Image
The first set on the left is my original starter set given to me several years ago. It doesn't have the nice two-tone tiles and it prints the numbers on the tiles. I use this set only with absolute beginners. You'll might not notice that I hand-painted red-fives in this set. The set on the right is my Riichi set. I love it but admit that the tiles are just a little small for my tastes. Apparently 26mm x 20mm x 16mm is roughly correct for a standard Riichi set but maybe my hands are just a little too clumbsy. It's well pained and very uniform. The middle set is my most recent acquisition and while not a Riichi set it has that nice two-tone look and a bigger tile which suits me really well. I haven't painted the red fives in this set yet.

My book collection is equally small. I tend to get a lot of my information from good guides on the interwebs. Most of the books I find locally are for American mahjong (what's with the hand cards changing every year?! oh well...).

ps: if you need a place to store an image to display here on the site, just send me a message and I'm happy to host it.

I went through a phase of frenzied book-buying when I first got into the game, even though most only cover the traditional Chinese or American rules of course.

These are the more recent ones. I previously described most of these here. The two in the middle of the bottom row are the original and revised editions of Teach Yourself: Mahjong described here.

These are the older ones, mostly from the 70's. The one with the most "character" (dirt!) is Mah Jong Simplified by Henry Peterson and dates back to the mahjong craze in the 1920's - it's almost 90 years old. The pale green one is Mah Jong Handbook for Beginners by Futami Kogeisha which I understand was made to be bundled with mahjong sets - unusually it's in English but covers the Japanese terms and rules including riichi and dora.

The final six are Japanese books. The quiz book on the right was kindly gifted to me by Benjamin. The other red one (one of several named 麻雀入門!) is a favourite, with cartoon images and diagrams on every page.

I don't play in real life but could hardly let that stop me enjoying the visual and tactile delights of a mahjong set so I have three - a cheap Chinese export set in a square metal case (bought for half price from a UK department store), the standard modern Japanese "Sango" set (which looks much like yours on the right) and this vintage Japanese set.

Great collection, Bart! I'm going into Boston soon to check out the amazing selection of used bookstores there where I'm sure I can bolster my collection.

By the by, who is the gorgeous girl on the cover of your Reach Mahjong book?

Her?

She's just a lil girl.
She comes on this site sometimes.
You may get some info about her hither and thither.

By the way, you can buy her book here.

Yes, yes... of course I knew that was Jenn. I'm up to Jongcast #45 (listening to 2 a day on my commute to catch-up). I forgot to add my smiley with a hasty post!

Thanks. 8) I know I'll be outgunned if Tom spots this thread though!

I got many of mine quite cheaply from eBay UK. Amazon and ABE also give easy access to thousands of sellers.

I only have a mere mahjong set and a mere junk mat. Nothing more. Well, add 2 square tables to play them on. As for English print books -- not all that happy with what's available.

So, you too have heard the legend of the Big Three "Dragons".

Each one a different colour as well!

I'm impressed. The spammer has managed to find a tile slightly relevant to the conversation.
