Wow!
A spammer finally managed to make a post fitting in the discussion!
Maybe I won't ban him/her to celebrate this historical event.
Or maybe not.

I just spotted it. But I have neither the time nor the energy this summer to post my collection, what with the summer game design class I'm teaching and all the writing I have to do before the fall semester begins. This gun is tired. Either that, or lazy. (^_^)

And I'm stuck for words to describe my reaction to the "bro-gamer" tone, or high school gym lockerroom tone, in the discussion of Jenn's book. Really, dudes? Really?

Really!

Barticle Collection Update 2013

Randomly I've picked up another four mahjong books in the past couple of weeks. I got all these off eBay UK very cheaply - about 8 pounds (US$12) in total including shipping, from three different sellers.

There's another Japanese primer (yet another entitled 麻雀入門!), modern editions of classics by Millington and Noss Whitney and finally a slim volume covering the Chinese Official rule-set with its many yaku. The new Noss Whitney has added colour photos of tiles throughout and removed "...the Modern Game" from the full title!

Those mean "Mahjong Entrance Door"

Essentially yes, but in combination 入門 denotes a manual, primer or introduction.

I've got an older Noss Whitney and I found it a dry read and not all that well laid out. It was the first book I got on Mahjong and I'll admit it kinda turned me off the game some years ago. Fortunately I had a resurgence thanks to Video Gaming which got me to take a 2nd look at the proper game :)

Do you know if it has been substantially updated/edited? Or just cosmetic changes?

Those are fair criticisms. The new edition seems to have identical text, the only difference I've spotted so far is the addition of kanji in the glossary entries. The larger, whiter pages and colour images really improve the presentation though.

The book remains noteworthy for presenting a Japanese rule-set in English - albeit an older one (hence revised title) without tiered limits or dora - and it's still nice to see a book with 80 pages in total dedicated to strategy and the glossary/index.

Tuttle asked me to review Whitney's book some years back. I told them that the best thing about the book is its strategy chapter, and that the rest of the book was outdated (and confusing to read). At the time, they decided to leave that one be, and they had me add some material to the Strauser & Evans book.
