Favorite Mahjongy-Tea

Post by wavemotion » Fri Sep 28, 2012 5:14 pm

Slow day... so why not stir up the Off-Topic forum!

I realize there is no such thing as a Mahjong-Tea. But you often see them serving tea in Mahjong Parlos (at least the few shots I've seen and in the Shin Janki movies). I have no idea what they serve there - I'm guessing some type of Green Tea. In the orient, apparently, tea is rather popular.

My choice of tea (whether playing Mahjong, reading about mahjong or any other time of the day!) is a loose-tea Jasmine-Oolong. This is considered a green tea but really sits somewhere between a green tea and black tea. I gather this is fairly popular in the orient - especially China. Reasonably cheap versions of this blend are served at American-Chinese food restaurants (which is where I first encountered it - the blend I use is quite a bit nicer in quality).

Any other tea drinkers?!

The only "T" I need is... tacos! :D

I don't drink tea or coffee but I can share some trivia. The phrase Ari Ari (effectively "with with") is used to refer to the common Japanese rule-set with Kuitan and Atozuke allowed but in a mahjong parlour it can also mean coffee with both milk and sugar. :) Similarly Nashi Nashi ("without without") is the opposite of both.

I don't like jasmine. And anyway I prefer cool beverages.

I used to love mashing tea: my favourite being gunpowder tea. I think I probably enjoyed the ritual more than drinking the tea though

It upsets my stomach now so I stick to coffee, instant, and not even very good :(

Cheers,

Ralph.

Hojicha (roasted bancha green tea) is my go-to tea of choice. It's tasty, it's cheap, and it's nearly impossible to screw up brewing it, unlike a good sencha that I will probably screw up half the time. If you haven't tried it, I recommend it.
