Anime Central Tournament 2013

Post by Kyuu » Wed Apr 24, 2013 12:07 am

Anime Central:
http://www.acen.org

Saturday, May 18 @ 6:00 PM

This year, the tournament will feature a 2-hanchan format, where the top 4 by aggregate score will qualify to a finals table. Unfortnately, I cannot attach PDF files to a forum post.

===

The tournament will use 2-hanchan per player, followed by a single hanchan finals table. A combined score between the two hanchan will be used to determine the top 4 players, who qualify to the finals.

Initially, all tables are labeled 1, 2, 3, 4. For the second hanchan, each table is reassigned A, B, C, D, where 1 -> A, 2 -> B, 3 -> C, 4 -> D.
This ensures: No one plays the same person twice in the 2 hanchans. Likewise, all players are guaranteed 2 hanchans. The initial seating for the numbered tables is determined by random draw.

Rotation into the second hanchan as follows:
1. Winner stays at current table.
2. Second place to table to the right.
3. Third place to table across.
4. Fourth place to table to the left.

Individual game rules: (Tenhou.net with some modification)

 Japanese mahjong rules – Standard Ari-Ari
 Agari-renchan. Tenpai without win = Wind rotation
 If Agari-renchan, Honba reset if rotation
 Abortive draw =//= Wind rotation + 1 Honba (just to be clear)
 Open tanyao and Atozuke
 One red-5 per suit
 Double ron allowed, and Triple ron results in abortive draw
 Wareme and Yakitori nashi
 Renhou = Mangan minimum, else use higher value (i.e. Haneman)
 Hand limit set at 32,000 (48,000 oya) – even for multiple yakuman
 Start score 25,000. Minimum 30,000 to win
 Uma: +20, +10, -10, -20
 Time limit: 1 hour 30 min (+15 min) per hanchan
 Overtime: West Round gets additional 30 minutes.

Finals Table:
 Start score 40,000
 Minimum 50,000 to win
 Time limit: None
 May play 1 or 2 hanchan. (Players agree at the start of the game.)
 If 2 hanchan selected, the points do not reset in the 2nd hanchan.
 Tenpai-renchan. (Normal)

Prizes:
 Merchandise will be available for giveaway, with accordance to ACEN’s rules

I've few questions:
- "Agari-renchan disabled": Does that means "no renchan at all"?
- "Overtime: West Round gets additional 30 minutes": Is the West round fully played (i.e. to the end of the West 4 hand) or does it stops as soon as someone gets more that 30k?
Cats don't do タンヤオ (tan-yao) but タニャーオ (ta-nya-o).

West Round ends once someone gets to 30K. And for the final, there is Renchan, which can be acquired by being tenpai rather than requiring agari. So, I'll just rephrase that to "Tenpai penchan". That's more accurate, right?

What night of the convention is it? The whole thing starts just after my finals week, so I might be able to work out a way to go.

Operating it last year was fun. Hopefully, it'll be a nice repeat this year. :D If I don't get enough players this time around for a tournament, then I'll be more than happy to free play -- and play people myself. That's a win-win either way.

And silly me. I didn't note the time.

It'll be scheduled for Saturday, May 18 @ 6:00 PM. It'll run till midnight; but hopefully, the hotel would grant extra time this year. Last year, we had to relocate in order to finish the tournament up.

I'm in the process of tabulating results. Unfortunately, I ran into some discrepancies, where I am working those out. It simply did not help lacking any sort of computer aid during the tournament. The only laptop (mine) blew out the AC adapter; and it was running out of power. So, there went that, and I had to record all scores using the old fashioned method (pen and paper). Thankfully, I was prepared for that scenario; but still... it would have helped.

To summarize up on ACEN weekend:

My panel team performed two "lectures" on mahjong for Friday and Saturday. On the evening of both nights, mahjong play sessions were held.

Friday was impromptu and unscheduled. I simply used the first panel and arranged a meetup time and location. Apparently, in another location, another gameplay session at the same time was held by another group member at another location. Both gameplay sessions had 2 tables of mahjong each. I managed to teach even more people then.

The Saturday evening was the scheduled session for Freeplay and Tournament. Unlike last year, I had no need to "beg" for anyone to fill in the slots. Unfortunately, gameplay was at a very slow pace. After the full hanchan for the first round, I had to shorten the second round to tonpussen. The final was brought back to a full hanchan. Overall, the entire night lasted 8 hours. Through that whole time, I did nothing but run the tournament and handle scoring (and documentation).

For Sunday, I was able to set up one table (all I could carry). After watching everyone else play, I wanted to get a game for myself. Thankfully, people whom I had taught in the past saw me; and we got a short game going then, before it was time for me to go home.

Overall, this was one awesome weekend.

PS: My laptop's AC adapter died off, just as the tournament started. So, I have to order a new one. Otherwise, I'd have the tournament results published by now.
