Heck, I'd probably even add that "After 2 seconds, it is presumed that whoever calls the tile first gets it." but I don't know if that kind of declaration would fit in the European metagame.When a tile is discarded, the maximum window of opportunity for calling it is 3 seconds. Conflicting calls have a maximum of 0.5 seconds to be made after the first one. In the case of someone who calls in 0.8 seconds, another player has up to 1.3 seconds after the initial discard to speak up, or else the first call stands. Should there be a conflict, the other players at the table are responsible for enforcing the time, not a referee.
The 0.5 second interval seems short enough to keep people attentive to the game but may still be perceived as too long by Japanese standards. Notwithstanding any of the above, a ron call still has 3 full seconds to be made.
