New legislation bans new mahjong video-games in China

Post by Barticle » Tue Apr 23, 2019 4:35 pm

There are reports this week of major new restrictions issued by the Chinese state regarding their approval of new video-games.

Any new mahjong or poker games will no longer be approved due to concerns over illegal gambling. This represents a significant proportion of sales in China's massive market, with 37% of the games approved in 2017 being mahjong or poker titles!

The ban has also been applied to games depicting corpses and blood (including the previous legal loophole of changing the colour ) and to games that reference aspects of China's imperial history.

It's sad to see this ban applied in the birthplace of mahjong.

(The bans on both mahjong and blood are particularly bad for anyone hoping to market an Akagi game!)
