It seems to me that any sleight of hand that involves leaving the wall in an altered state for any length of time is exceedingly risky, even if the others are distracted by their haipai. Though, the tricks that involve obscuring the opponent\'s view with the hand seem extremely difficult to catch, even while watching them draw.

On the subject of cheating, what is the penalty in your preferred set of rules? Some guys I know consider it a regular chombo, but most seem to demand a yakuman payout to all three opponents.

Uh, yeah. I would think that most people would agree with this.

What\'s the sense in having a penalty? Wouldn\'t you want to stop playing with someone if you caught them cheating? Or do you somehow include it as part of the game?

Well, nobody has ever actually cheated (to our knowledge), but if we did catch someone cheating, we probably wouldn\'t play with them anymore.

The reasoning behind the penalty is that the prospect of having to pay ridiculous amounts of points (or money) should be a fairly strong deterrent. Of course, after the game is over, they wouldn\'t be allowed to play in further matches. (At least not for money)

Hmm, I guess \"we take your wallet and beat you up\" would be enough of a deterrent for most people :)

Anybody still wondering if the development of automatic mahjong tables is laziness?

I must admit this is the fastest finger reading of the tiles I\'ve seen. Normally, it\'s impressive when you watch a person drawing, fingering and discarding without looking but finger reading upto four at a time is another thing all together
